The Z06 has just been introduced in Europe and we had the chance to test the car on track.
We have driven the Z06 on the Spa-Francorchamps track in Belgium. And we were surprised by the lack of power(/torque?) in 5th gear on Kemmel straight considering this is a 645HP car (see 2 videos attached).
We have therefore put the car on the power bench (see results attached). First thing we see is that the car has only 609HP at 8000rpm and 552Nm at 6600rpm. Second thing, there is a steep decrease in torque after 5th gear is engaged.
Car has currently 4000km and is equipped with the Z07 package.
Before the car was released, some of the first track footage showed that when the car went into 5th, acceleration decreased significantly. If you visit over in the C8 Z06 forum, you would find a lot of talk about the disappointment that the Z06 did not get its own gearset. The car should have been geared with 5th being at least 10% shorter and top speed reached in 6th gear, which would mean that 6th gear needed to be about 15% shorter. We all find the gearing to be a problem and very disappointing since the car was heavily influenced by the Ferrari 458, which has very tight gearing.
If the 609 HP is at the rear wheels, the car is correct. If that is being converted to estimate rated power, that introduces new variables.
I think this chap learned about the old adage: "there's HP and then there is Chevy HP" (always overstated).
Great video clips! Big Cajones driving Spa in the wet!
