I have a 2024 C8 less than 1000 miles without Z51 and no performance exhaust. On a cold start, the engine revs to 1600 rpm and I have to put it in gear to bring it down. Even on a relatively warm start, it goes into the 1200's.. I took it to the dealer where I purchased it and they had it overnight. They tried cold starts on 2 floor 2024 c8's and they said they did the same high rev starts. So no resolution.
To me, it seems excessive. When I watch YouTube videos on the C8 I'll pay very careful attention to them when they show a start and most do not show the high revs but I don't know the initial conditions.
I think this is way high and certainly my c7 doesn't do it and I feel it will lead to excessive wear.
I wouldn't worry about it. And I wouldn't put the car in gear right away to get the initial cold start engine speed down. No need to hammer the clutch on a cold transmission. I just wait for a small amount of time for the engine rpm to come down bellow 1000 or so; then put in gear. The engine ECM knows what it's doing.
Hot idle for emissions. Let the car do it's thing; 100% computer controlled. Absolutely no excessive wear because of it...gets oil flowing and heats up the cats.
Those aren't really "high revs." It's just the normal warm up idle speed. You've probably noticed that it drops after a couple of minutes even if you don't put it in gear.
It is normal and I hate the high rpm and very lengthy cold start of the C8. I have a 2021 and its been that way since new. all the C8's are like that. I have had 2 brand new C7s and one new 2021 Camaro SS, all 3 of those cars with the 6.2 have a 900 rpm cold start and it lasted for 15 seconds versus the awful C8 of 30 seconds and 1600 rpm. BTW, this can be tune out along with AFM.
The cold start process of today is much different, for a different purpose and one that makes a lot more noise.
1600 rpm was the subject. Doesn't matter how or why it's there. I can hold my mild to wild switch in closed while I'm starting my GS and the valves close almost immediately, so it is actually quieter at initial start rpm than my stock C3 LT-1.
Cold engine start up flare - I hate this and calibrated this out on most of the cars I worked on. It can't be good for engine longevity. This is done for emissions. And not what you think - not high CO. What do you think is the highest gas emission at start up? NOX. In the case of your Corvette, this is 'normal'.
