C8 Lost Power
Here are the facts:
I drove the car home on the highway over 60 MPH with the roof up and parked in in the garage for about a day and a half. The alarm was NOT set and the doors were NOT locked.
I got into the driver’s side using the normal external opener, sat in the seat, closed the door, and then lost all power to the vehicle. ABSOLUTELY NO POWER inside and outside the entire car.
I could have used the manual door opener on the floor but had someone insert the FOB key into the keyhole to open the door for me.
Manually opened the frunk and put the US 3300 on it using the input port and let it sit for about 11 hours. Still no power.
I took the covers off and put a 10A charger on the battery for about 3-5 hrs.
I had enough power to open the doors using the normal process and the interior lights came on.
I removed the 10A charger and the car started so I backed it out and let it run for about 20 minutes.
The info message said to index both windows so I did so.
A message appeared saying the top was not secured but yet it looked and felt fully secured.
I drove it on the highway to the nearest dealer and it would not allow me to go over 58 MPH because it said the top was not secured.
It was charging just over 14 Amps on the way.
The technician checked out the battery and charging system. All is OK
He was able to make the info message go away by lowering and raising the roof.
He suggested that perhaps I did not hold the button long enough the last time I raised the roof. In my mind that cannot have been the case because as I said above, I drove the car 60+MPH home before parking it in my garage.
There is a known C8 issue regarding the trans putting a drain on the battery but my car did not have all of the exact codes that the Detroit guys were expecting to see in the logs but the dealer technician is sending the logs anyhow.
Questions I have:
I believe I read in the manual that if you leave any electronic on, the car will shut them off automatically after 10 min. If that is the case, the info display would have gone to sleep and if there was a “top not secured” message it should not have caused a power drain.
It is my understanding if you disconnect the neg battery and leave it sit for 20 min and reconnect it the computers will reset the electronics (like allowing you to put it into neutral) and perhaps that happened but not by me.
Anyone have a technical explanation why all of the sudden this would happen???
Sounds like a good anti-carjacking option that GM should add but it was not on my option list.
