Default High Flow Cat Question - CELs

Had the newest iteration of the Soul HFCs installed on Friday. Got a CEL about 10 miles after picking up the car but needed to be somewhere so I couldn’t go back. Will follow up with the shop on Monday. Codes are P0420 and P0430. Like I said, codes didn’t pop up right away but I know the Z06 can be sensitive when it comes to emissions readings.

I’ve tried to clear the CEL but am I correct in assuming that the codes won’t clear if there is some type of issue?

I’ve always had Soul HTCs on every high end car I’ve owned and never had issues so I felt comfortable with the choice. Hoping it’s a simple install issue but we’ll see.

Do you have the 02 spacers? Those sport cats are a hit and miss without the O2 spacers. And that's on any car.

Spacers are a must, only see a CEL after 300 miles on catless pipes

Just had them installed with whatever came in the order so I don’t think spacers were included but I was also told that nothing else would be required. That said, I have seen mention of O2 spacers and/or “mini cats”. Never had to buy anything extra when I did HFCs on any of my prior cars but those were also tuned accordingly now that I think about it.

Curious why the CEL wouldn’t show up immediately? The emissions systems are so sensitive and pass/fail that I would have thought a CEL would be triggered immediately if an issue was there versus after some driving.

But should I be able to clear the codes and then eventually see them again? I can read the codes but can’t get them to clear.

I am not sure but I thought Soul HFC came without 02 spacers. I have the 2M sport cats and 02 spacers that came with it for reassurance I guess. So far no CEL.

You could be right. I’ve reached out to Soul to see what they recommend and go from there. The shop that did the install mentioned that it’s been extremely hit or miss with the HFCs and CELs on the Z06. They recommended adding the “mini cats” as insurance.

There are two ports on the cats. One for the 02 sensor what is the second one for?

Update: Finally cleared both the P0420 and P0430 codes. CEL is no longer there. Went and beat on the car for about half an hour without the CEL returning. Will see what tomorrow brings.

If you cleared codes and didn't actually fix anything, the codes will most likely return in XX number of drive cycles.

To OP, I hope this doesn't keep popping up. I've had the worlds worst experience with Soul. This CEL keeps popping up on my 24' Z06 and it came back today actually. Car currently has 2500 miles and I've only put on 1k miles on the HFC's. Today is the 5th CEL I think. I'll clear it, it will be fine for a little then it comes back. The O2 spacers are in. Sam from Soul is looking for a fix but I'm half ready to ditch them. I love the sound but dealing with the CEL constantly is annoying.....

I have V2 of Soul cats with the extra hole/plug adjustment, and I to keep getting the CEL. I bought the CELSync OBDII monitor which cancels out only the Exhaust CEL and have had no more annoying check engine light.

I also have the V2's with the extra bung and built in heat shields. The brass caps that cover the extra bung fell off after the first drive and I got a CEL. Soul shipped new caps and said the first ones must not have been tight. Tore car apart and installed new ones and i ensured they were tight. They fell out again and I got a cel. They shipped more caps along with blue loctite. I asked if blue loctite will work because of the high heat there. Soul said it would. Took car apart and reinstalled again and of course they fell out and I got a cel. Then they sent me steel caps along with some high temp loctite. So far those are staying in place but now my reoccuring cell is the p0420 code.

I'll definitely look into that celsync module...

Haven’t had any issues with the plugs. I did tell the shop to use loctite to ensure they were tight because I heard of them being loose. I have a HTC so hard to see and they are still there!

Each time mine came out there was a very notiicible sputter coming from the engine. Plus the CEL i was gettingg said both banks lean. Once the steel cans and the high temp loctite came in, that code went away and i thought i was in the clear. Then the p0420 started popping up. Soul said I should hear from them this week with an answer

Please keep us posted. Jerry from Recoil Racing said that he didn’t believe that I would not get a CEL. Sure enough I did. They have 2 C8Zs and constantly they get a CEL and have to reset it every time. PITA

It does not go by drive cycles. In the ECM is code to do an OBDII check of various things - catalyst efficiency is one of them. The test compares the fore and aft oxygen sensor wave forms and from this, determines a pass or fail. This test will only run within a narrowly defined window of things like engine running time, load, RPM, coolant temperature, vehicle speed etc. You have to stay within this window long enough to complete this process. It is conceivable that you could drive your car multiple times without this test being able to complete. Eventually, it will and if your cats do not give an acceptable waveform on the aft oxygen sensor, the car will log a diagnostic trouble code and check engine light. Spacers may or may not help. Everything in this test is fully calibratable, at least at the OEM level. There are a number of ways to defeat this test, but you have to be able to change the calibration. Being this is not possible on the Z06, using cats which do not closely mimic OEM catalyst efficiency will likely end up with reoccurring check engine lights and an inablilty to pass an OBDII test required in some states for inspection.

Yea I have one more year before I have to do an emissions test to register my car again inTX. Hopefully by then there will be a solution or I find a “guy” to pass.

I don’t have cats and get the CEL every 100 miles or so. Clears easily.
