And pilots remember how to fly by dead reckoning, too, but they don't do it any longer unless there's a problem. It's called: progress.
Yeah, so much progress that GPS often points delivery drivers to the apartments behind my house instead of to my front door. The Key Maps book has it right:-)
GM needs all the "avionics" to be based on a smartphone. They recieve MANY more updates than GM can muster. I have a Tesla and one of the best thing is the frequent updates that give you more features over time. One can dream. Its a shame we lost the Software guy recently from Apple. GM needs to figure out software and stop buying the crappy 2nd rate software from 3rd parties.
The GPS is used for many things beside navigation, including the front lift, OnStar location, and others.
You can download offline maps just like your old nav had but more up to date by following the instructions you’ll find in the post I made above.
Noticket or anyone else: I am interested in doing the offline map download. Did you do it? I would like to know how long it takes, can it drain the battery,
does the message on the screen about needing a subscription at startup go away, etc.

I tried this yesterday and I got another error message that made me want to scream. The car said, you must be online to use offline maps. Subscribe! (I was connected to my homes wifi but the car wants a paid data subscription)
You can't make this sh*t up. I'm so frustrated with this system that I'm done with new GM cars until they go back to what works

Im so confused, why wouldn’t you just use CarPlay?

I use android auto, but it was easier to just have the "radio screen" up to switch stations faster and easier. Now I HAVE to have the AA screen up at all times to get messages, use navigation, etc. It's a huge step backward.

That is so disappointing. I don’t think I’ll be buying any more GM vehicles if you need a $29 a month sub to get nav. They aren’t including Android auto and CarPlay on EVs and they have stated long term their plan is to bring that strategy to all vehicles.

Read the text in the pic carefully. To use offline maps, you must have a subscription plan... seems counterintuitive at first, until you realize "offline" maps are only used when cell service dies. So, you can use WiFi at home to grab the maps more quickly, but the system won't let you use them until you pay the piper.

On the phone with Onstar yesterday for 30 minutes. I finally got the agent to give me a one month free trial and it would
take care of the maps issue. When asked would it be there tomorrow when I started the car. She assured me it would be.
It wasn't there today when I drove the car. Called Onstar again. Agent said I needed a data plan. She was hard to understand
and I don't think she knew what she was talking about. Hung up, called another Onstar agent. Similar confusion. Both could
see that I was given the free month but said I needed a plan with data. Neither would change the plan to one with data.
