Some of you know I’ve had more than my fair share of issues since purchasing a new Z in July. Way too many trips to the dealer each month than anyone should have to deal with including the infamous tick that sounded like a rod knocking when warmed up. The dealer tried to fix the tick twice and I got GM involved. They sent out a tech to my local dealer for attempt #3, found that no 7 exhaust valve train was out of spec, fixed it and no more tick. The field service engineer arrived with a special tool the dealer does not have which was instrumental in getting back into spec. Apparently out of tolerance
I was persistent about the issue and GM stood tall and fixed it.

I’m not going to publicly shame someone especially since the computer selects the shim sizes, not the builder, for the valvetrain. That would not be fair.

I thought the same thing, maybe a few thousandths. 3 mm is three dimes stacked up, in valvetrain that's like a gap you could throw a cat through.
the tick was more like a knock when warmed up. Glad it is fixed. Not sure what the special tool was but noted on my paperwork that dealer does not have access to one yet but field service engineers do.
Hope this helps someone else out and restores some trust that GM will fix it and support dealerships when needed.

Great news OP.
So, all the stuff about the Z's ticking issues being normal turned out to be nonsense?
it sounds like a sewing machine as the valvetrain is not hydraulic but a loud tick is not normal. My sounded like a rod knock when the car got warmed up. Glad to be in the other side of this.

Did the dealer request assistance from GM engineering or are you saying you arranged for this on your own?

when the dealer did not fix the first time I asked for a FSE and was denied as GM wanted dealer to attempt fix second time. They said if the second attempt did not work, they would send out FSE.

At the risk of sounding cynical, please let us know if it stays fixed. If it does, that would be excellent news. We would all like to know there is a permanent solution to this issue. Thanks!
