One of my old cars was hit pretty hard a month after I got it. Carfax showed it had structural damage in the accident. I sold the car to Carmax 5 or so years later. I disclosed the accident to them.
Since the Autocheck report used by Carmax didn't have any mention of the damage or accident, Carmax listed the car as no accidents, perfect histroy, etc lol. Someone out there if going to have a bad day when they go to sell that car and see its real history. So yeah, don't trust autocheck lol
My neighbor's car which was totaled by the insurance company, he bought the car, fixed it himself, then resold it with a 100% clean Carfax report, he did make it REAL CLEAN to the buyer the car was destroyed and put back together
How much invisible damage from kinetic energy was caused by the initial and other impacts in situations like these ?
The engine and transmission are tight packages that may bare no visual clues to the effects of several tens of thousands of foot pounds of energy and torsional movement being forced thru them by the shunt. A large component may look OK, but, a shift of .5 mm in the parts assembly could be fatal.
