Default Cracked Windshield

Two months old and I see a cracked windshield as I am leaving my house. A small chip near the bottom and the crack propagated at least 12" across the driver's side. Insurance will cover. I have a choice of using USAA's vendor, which is SafeLite, and I can ask for manufacturer's glass to be used. I have used SafeLite long ago and they did an adequate job. I suspect the local dealer will likely sub this out to a body shop. Anyone have experience with windshield replacement and can offer suggestions on how to proceed?

Safelite should have the equipment to get this done, and would be my choice personally as THATS WHAT THEY DO.

Any thoughts on using SafeLite replacement glass vs manufacturer's glass? On my C6, the glass for heads-up display was different. Is that still the same in 2025? I know if they spec it correctly for Z06, that should not be an issue because all Z06 have heads-up display as standard equipment.

If they cover manufacterer glass ,yes, always use it. There is a coating to help view the HUD.

Safelite replace the 'shield on my 2021 with an OEM factory windshield and did a find job. Just make sure you have them do it in their shop, and not outdoors at your location with dirt, dust, pollen, bugs, and whatever else getting into the adhesive.

Thanks for the suggestion of having them do it in their shop. I had not thought about that.

I was very happy with Safelite 14 years ago replacing the HUD windshield for my 2011 ZR1. It was GM OEM glass with the GM logo partially erased off to reduce the price per agreement with GM’s supplier.

That’s a good question, and I would check into this a bit, because in my Porsche GT3, they have some type of wires or sensors imbedded in the glass, not sure exactly what it was, did this years ago, but I decided to use Porsche dealer to replace window to be safe.

If you look at the bottom, passenger side of your windshield it should say HUD meaning it is made for use with your HUD.

USAA used Safelite to replace the windshield in my ‘74 911 race car a few years ago. They did it at my house in my garage and did a great job. Pics just because I love the car!

what year is your car ? 24 and up has had some availability issues w oem shields (ask me how I know). If can go oem I would go that route over aftermarket but a lot of dealers don’t actually install these and use safelite or similar vendor for installs.

I smashed my suv windshield (long story) and little did I know with all the safety, driver assist, hud, assist crap how complicated the replacement would be. Safelite spent 2 hours installing the new one. Spent quite a bit of time on the phone with the manufacturer “recalibrating”. They did nothing wrong, in fact they were awesome, this was all part of the original estimate to complete. My point was it was complicated and safelite did a great job…oh and did the whole thing in my driveway.

Used Safelite many times; always happy with the results. But, especially with an HUD, only have them install OEM glass.
