Heads up - they are tracking and reporting driving habits

OP you should also post this to the "C8 General" forum where it will get more visibility.

Getting rid of the app won't do anything to stop their recording your use lol. The data is being sent straight from the car. The app just displays it.

How does one disable OnStar altogether?

How does it differentiate whether you are on a race track or the highway? I'm sure it doesn't. That could make a difference to potential "data users". LE or your insurance company might frown on a high percentage of "speed over 80 mph".

Heads up if you haven't seen this.. even after my OnStar initial trial was over, I checked the MyChevrolet app and noticed that they are tracking and reporting driving habits including what they consider hard acceleration and hard braking events. I disabled this in the app by going to "more" in the bottom right and then unenrolling from Chevrolet Smart Driver. It was on by default in my case. A few of my friends mentioned their information has been sold and even ended up on their credit report in some cases as C8 owners.

All manufacturers are collecting this data. I turned the functionality off in my VW and in order to do so I had to agree to disable all electronic services, such as over the air software updates. I happily agreed and can get the software updates when I bring the car in for oil changes.

It's only going to get worse. Some insurance companies are insisting that insureds have a telematic app on the insured's phone which beams that info to the insurer and they adjust premiums accordingly. Your car already has an air bag control module which records everything 5 seconds before an air bag deployment. I had the Caddie app on my Vs which showed everything like original poster of this thread. I dont have personal knowledge of Tesla but I am told their system is even more intrusive.

The only way this ends is if we get consumer privacy rights legislation passed into law in the US. All companies are competing with one another to maximize their profit streams and none of them will voluntarily cut off a profit stream unless they are all required to. The US hasn't passed any laws on digital privacy since the 1990s and it needs an update. It should even be one of the few bipartisan issues in the US.

So they are definitely selling this data if you are enrolled:

Wow. Why am I not surprised. Big brother is always watching. This is how they will track your mileage so they can then tax you on miles driven. A concept propsed in Ct, and no doubt California since CT is the east coast California. This is just the beginning.

Who enrolls the people in the first place? GM when the order is taken and vin is there or the Dealership when the car is dropped off? It would be nice to nip it in the bud before it starts.

I think it is when you first enroll with Onstar. There is a brief acknowledgement that you understand Onstar will be collecting data as you begin the registration process. Be careful if the salesman offers to help you set up Onstar. It looks pretty benign, until you evaluate the consequences. As I recall, it's one of those things you have to check "OK" before it will let you go to the next step - kind of like the way they try to trick you into signing up for Google maps before loading your supposedly stand-alone nav package. A few years ago I tried to unplug Onstar in my C6 Z06 - it was tied to the ECU and the car would not start.

the only way around this BS is to physically remove or disconnect the wireless cellular chip from the telemetry module so that it can't communicate with anything without a physical connection.
