Out for a little spin by the lake tonight when I hit the gas at a green light the car backfired and then almost stalled. So at the next red I tried it again, stomped the gas and same result. If I get on it once I'm moving no problem. Ideas? Thanks.

Mike, 9 times out of 10, its usually something electrical as mentioned above, wires, plugs, timing so that would be my first things on the checklist. But sometimes too, a loss of vaccum can cause a backfire as well so check all your vaccum lines while you're at it. Finally check all the carb settings and fittings. Good luck
Thanks for all the good advice guys, I'm going out after lunch to have a look. I'll let you know what I find out. No Bruce no new mods. By the way I saw all your for sale stuff I amy be out in Pickering this weekend if you're home can I stop by and have a look?

Mike, when it comes to backfiring through the carb, 99.9% of times it comes down to 1 of 2 things...incorrect timing or carb setting (usually too rich)...try to wiggle your distributor cap and see if there is any play in it...if its tight and no has messed with the timing then set your attention to the fuel mixture. If the cap is loose, then you'll need to retime it with a timing light. Not sure about your exactly but SB chevy's usually come out of the factory with timing set between 6 and 8 degrees. If you need a timing light, I'm in Oakville and can give you a hand on the weekend...
I'll tend to go with what 4GTABODT, says and lets hope that's the problem. I had the same problem when my wife had a Z28 with a 350 and the same symptoms, except it was a gradual backfire which slowly intensified. It ended up being the 2 lobs on the cam were wearing out. I don't believe and am hoping that's not your case.
I'll keep you posted. Was working from home today with the hopes I could get out and work on the car a bit. Too busy. First thing tomorrow. Thanks for the help.
