C6 Recall
04086 -- Rear Brake Lining Routing
2005 Chevrolet Corvette VIN breakpoints 55100321-55101325
Condition
General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle
safety, exists in certain 2004 and 2005 model year Cadillac XLR vehicles,
and 2005 model year Chevrolet Corvette vehicles. The rear brake lines may
contact other components or be affected by heat from them.
If contact occurs, the driver may hear a rattle noise. Over time, the
contact could cause brake line wear-through resulting in a slow loss of
brake fluid, which would appear as fluid spotting under the vehicle. On XLR
vehicles, this could also create a visible puff of smoke when the brakes are
applied. If enough fluid is lost, the performance of the rear brakes will be
reduced, there would be an increase in brake pedal effort in order to
achieve the desired braking, and the brake system warning light may
illuminate on the instrument panel.
If the brake line on XLR vehicles is affected by heat, the fluid in the
brake line could boil. The performance of the rear brakes will be reduced
and there would be an increase in brake pedal effort in order to achieve the
desired braking.
If this were to occur when stopping distance is limited, a crash could
occur.
Correction
Dealers are to inspect, and reposition or secure if necessary, the rear
brake lines to ensure that there is adequate clearance from other underbody
components. On some vehicles, a machining tab on the rear differential
housing may need to be removed to provide adequate clearance. The rear brake
lines are to also be inspected and, if damaged, repaired.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 05V455000
Mfg's Report Date : OCT 04, 2005
Component: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 123592
Summary:
CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH A POWER STEERING HOSE THAT IS NOT TO SPECIFICATION. UNDER EXTREME STEERING MANEUVERS, SUCH AS TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL FULLY TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT WHILE BRAKING, THE HOSE MAY FRACTURE AND LEAK FLUID.
Consequence:
IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, POWER STEERING ASSIST WOULD BE LOST AND INCREASED STEERING EFFORT WOULD BE REQUIRED. ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH HYDRO-BOOST POWER BRAKES, IT COULD ALSO RESULT IN LOSS OF POWER BRAKE ASSIST AND INCREASED BRAKING EFFORT WOULD BE REQUIRED. IF THE POWER STEERING FLUID SPRAY WERE TO SPRAY ONTO HOT ENGINE PARTS, AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE COULD OCCUR.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE POWER STEERING HOSE(S) FOR TWO SUSPECT DATE CODES AND REPLACE THEM IF REQUIRED. THE RECALL WILL BEGIN ON OCTOBER 14, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727, OR HUMMER AT 1-800-732-5493.
