I've actually read of problems with the manual where people can't shift from 2nd to 3rd when they are "on-the-go." Not surprised as my '01 Trans Am had the same problem. I haven't heard of any problems with the automatic so far.

For normal around town driving I would go with an auto.
For drag racing (bracket racing) they say automatics are much more consistent so they work better.

For road racing / HPDE, I think a manual is the only way to go unless you want to manually shift the auto. I ran an automatic at a HPDE and was getting killed by "slower" cars because I could not get on the power coming out of corners. It would want to downshift at the wrong time/place. When it would downshift, it was like it took a deep breath first which sort of unloaded the chassis.

This was my first time on the track so I did not want to fool with trying to manually downshift/upshift. I was afraid with the stock shifter I would throw it into Neutral.

I also got high trans temp warnings about 3/4 through each session. Yes that could be solved with a transmission cooler...

I drove my 6 speed on the track the other day and I had much more control of the car, shifted when I wanted, and powered through and out of corners much better than the A4.

Just my observations.
Oh yeah, stick shifts are much more fun to drive
(except in stop-n-go traffic)

well, let's see - I'm over 50, going through a mid life crisis for the last 20 years, not yet bald as I have more hair now than ever before especially in my ears and on my back! but, I just like the automatics, lazy in my old age I guess.....

I'm 28 and have owned a 99 Automatic coupe.

It has changed at how I look at an Automatic sports car. The Automatic was SO Much FUN! When you have 350 hp under your foot you dont need a manual as an excuse for fun. Although I love driving a manual is smaller lighter cars ..... when I get my next vette it will probably be AUTO again....

There is a 1-4 feature in my '03 that I don't like. When I'm in first and my speed is between 24-34kph, I have to shift into 4th gear, it locks out the 2nd and 3rd gear. But once I get into fourth, I can down shift.

Shifting at 5500 rpm will solve your problem.....

I'm not talking about the CAGS, I am talking about shifting second to third at high RPMs.

Exactly my opinion, I'm just too lazy to type it all.

I've had 1 auto (80 ZZ4) and 2 sticks (6-speed 1992 & 2002). IMO the stick beats an auto for driving pleasure, particularly with some Quad-oval Borlas. I find that the 1st and 2nd ratios are too close and I'll typically shift from 1 to 3 for quick getaways. Just my 2 cents.

I say buy the absolute best car for the least amount of money that you can find, be it an auto or manual.

That's what I'd do, transmission type would be low on my priority list, overall cost, condition, options etc trump that.

Mike, you're going nuts right now, but be patient. Find the right Vette for the right price.

You don't have to find one this Summer. If it comes along next Spring, then so be it. Don't buy something you don't really want and don't get ripped off.

Good Luck Man, Loscoe Res
