Default DIY changing clutch fluid... PATMAN?!?

Just reading on Ranger's website about changing clutch fluid for all LSX engines. Makes perfect sense, and I remember having my clutch petal stick a few times on my LS1 Trans Am, scared the heck outta me! Hasn't happened yet on the vette, but I don't think I've changed my clutch fluid yet, and I'm almost positive its dirty by now. Looks very easy to do, and cheap, a GREAT combination! I love being able to do my own stuff on my car, even if it is very limited.

You can check the how-to on Ranger's site here: http://www.rangeracceleration.com/Clutch_Care.html (lots of other good stuff on here too!)

Anyone else done this yet?
And question for the resident CF fluids expert, Mr. PATMAN, which clutch fluid do you recommend?! GM brand DOT3? Or is there a better brand? He also says you can use Synthetic DOT4 as long as its specified on the can, and one last thing, anyone know how much the car requires?

Ok, one LAST question, where can I get a syringe? Or will a turkey baster fit in the cylinder? Don't have my car here to check, so I can't see it to know. I want to do this when I take my car out of storage, get most of that old, dirty, stagnant clutch fluid OUTTA there!

...in 35 days!!!

Ok lets see I use Valvoline SYN Power Full Synthetic
This exceeds dot 3 & 4 .
Great product ,just make sure you clean your current system of all the factory fluid so you don't mix.
Avialable at Crappy Tire .

The syringe's are avaible at TSC in the (horse section ) and come invarious size's . I use the 35mm and 60mm .

There ya go Corrado

Corrado, I picked mine up at a local TSC store, but then I'm not in the 'big city'. It was a 35mm syringe that does it in one shot. Get yourself a small funnell as well because you don't want to spill any of this stuff either. Get a big bottle because once you see how easy it is to do you'll be doing it more frequently...next time you cross the border pick it up there...it's almost half the price. As for the brand...opinions will vary...but at the end of the day...as long as you change it often that's what will count.

Try TSCstores.com...but the only 'bridge' they're located in is Cambridge. If you want I can pick you up a pair and bring them to the P&B tomorrow.

I just did this on my Camaro a few weeks ago. The small reservoir does not contain much fluid but wow was it BLACK! It took me about 6 times to get rid of all the black fluid. I used a turkey baster and it worked well for me. I do the same thing with my Brake Fluid and Power Steering Fluid. Fluids are cheap, might as well keep them clean!

Hey thanks for the offer Greg! I have a turkey baster, so I'll use that, its never been used, don't make many turkeys!

Jason, you're right, fluid is cheap, this is an easy way to take care of our cars without breaking the bank.

A "turkey baster", is that what the young folks call it now ???

Actually, Corrado I did have that clutch petal sticking issue on my C6. If you think it scared the crap out you in the T/A, try in the vette. If you do get this problem, there is a TSB out there and GM will fix it under warranty (some spring issue).

I do my clutch fluid several times throughtout the season (also track my car), I usually use Prestone DOT 4, not too expensive and never had any issues with it.

FYI, for my brakes I use Motul RBF 600 which is also a DOT 4 but costs considerable more money....but I don't want to skimp on brakes!

Its great to go fast, but you better be able to stop when you need to
So don't skimp the small things like quality fluids

To be honest, I know nothing about clutch fluid, motor oil is complicated enough to keep track of!

Castrol SRF is considered the best that there is, but it's not cheap! Unless of course you can hook us up?
