Had my '02 A4 vert into W.N. last fall before I put it away for the winter, to get a few concerns checked out before my GMPP expired (May2/08)...anyway, lots of kms left, didn't hit the 160,000 that comes with the 6 years, but, Friday night, 7 days after the GMPP expired, the trans started slipping so badly I almost didn't make it up 20 hill to get home after work..... my work order from W.N. shows no problems found or evident re the trans, even though they had it a whole week to check everything.......and the car won't make it back to that dealer the way it is except on a tilt and load..... I called W.N. but could only leave a message for the service dept and haven't heard back yet, so I contacted a local dealer to see if I can get some policy consideration from G.M.....
I should find out by the end of the day....
Anyone else have trans issues with their A4? Any similar experiences?
Mine's a 2000 A4 - no problems to report. Keep us posted as I am signed up for the CoW tune later in May and the tune is particularly more significant to A4's as it deals with shift points/times.....
Car STILL at the stealership!! 4 days, and they finally just got the trans out!! Haven't yet heard if it'll get covered under the warranty though, but the service manager there says it looks good.... the factory rep wants to see it apart first......
The guy told me it's 16 hours book time to R&R the trans! Told me "it's in the back of the car, not in the front you know"... I said yeah buddy, I know...my comfort level is going down.....
Dan, be polite and don't lose your cool especially with the rep or dealer to start with. When somebody does that with me I automatically give them nothing. Ask the rep for consideration as you have done and point out how many miles you have driven the car since it died on you. The fact that the time has passed but so few miles were added are clear that the problem was prexisting to warranty failure and the fact that you reported it before hand lends credibility to your case. If you end up getting no assistance contact me as I might be able to provide some help to get you the attention you require.
you will be fine,if worse comes to worse you call customer service and they will give you goodwill, but only do this if you hit a wall, which you won't.I had the same thing with a fuel pump,non-vette,it had been in 3 months earlier, found nothing even though it went in on the hook, the warranty was over 2 months expired when it did fail.
UPDATE........ my car's at Will's Motors in Grimsby, the service manager there - Jim McInerney called me to let me know it's all going to be taken care of.... he said he had a bit of trouble getting GMPP to pay 100%, they initially offered only 50%... but it's getting covered... should get it back let next week sometime....

I think this was just a ploy to make it seem like they had to work hard to get it covered. Seems to happen not only in the automotive business.
The 16 hours sounds about right. My camaro had a similar problem with the tranny about 2.5 years into the warranty. Ended up being the rubber/cork lining on one side of the braking gear (not the proper term but this is what it does) had worn down. You wouldn't know that until you pulled the tranny completely apart. The rebuild would have cost me $3500 if it happened out of warranty. Labour alone was 14 hours. And this was at WN.
Yikes, I hope I never have tranny problems with my C5! It's not like it was in my 5.0 Mustang days, when I'd get my best friend to yank my T5 tranny out in his driveway in about a half hour, and throw in yet another cheap used T5 that I had picked up for $400 or $500. (I went through 7 transmissions in my Mustang! The extra horsepower of a Paxton supercharger just killed those trannies, I really should've just bought a Tremec and that would've lasted forever!)
Did they say what it was?? I have a 2000 A4 and was wondering
3rd and 4th clutch pack mostly, he says, but apparently the whole trans is being rebuilt completely, with what he says GM calls a master rebuild kit, new torque converter, etc......
And I agree yes, they often try to give you the impression that they had to work real hard to get the repair done under warranty. If for some reason GM wouldn't have covered it, I would have gone elsewhere and got an RPM trans or similar, tne a Vigilante perhaps, and a 3.42.... would have been a good time to make all the up-grades, I still could have supplied the diff and converter in this case, but decided just to leave it stock......
Just picked up my car from WIlls Motors in Grimsby, had the trans rebuilt under warranty/policy, so far, I'm pleased, they explained everything to me in detail about the rebuild, and everything else they checked and went over, including the suspension, torque tube etc... car runs good, just brought it back to my office, and I'll get some km's on it this weekend back and forth to the boat a few times.
It actually seems to run as good as new......they even washed and detailed my car for me.... I usually like to get a certain 5'10" 136lbs blond in 6" spike heels to wash it for me though, I sure hope she isn't dissappointed that it's already clean... maybe I'd better get it dirty before I pick her up later just to make her feel good....

If you're gonna read a menu to us you gotta post a pic or two

It is the same problem my Camaro had. The 3rd and 4th clutch plates are so far into the tranny housing, it makes sense to do the rebuild at this point. I was told that as the lining wore down on the plates, there was slippage, but not enough for you to notice until where it wouldn't engage at all. So with new clutch plates installed, the tranny feels like it should.
HEY! Day dreams can be fun too ya know!!! Actually, if I didn't just have to put $87.35 in the tank, I'd have a little left over to take my sweetie out and show her my appreciation for cleaning my car.....
