Having done this Joe I can give you a few pointers.

If you want to PM me your number, we can talk...

The mileage is 7,500 miles or 12,000 km before GM Canada will provide you warranty coverage

And it has to have been in service for 6 months. If not you have to drive it until you have the 12K or the 6 months before you can get warranty.

Good luck!

That's right Mike - just to be clear - the car has to have 12,000 km AND 6 months of service before GM canada will give you warranty coverage..

Just to clarify. Legally there is NO milage or age restriction. You can in fact legally import a brand new car.

Both age and millage restrictions are imposed by GM Canada.

Check out the website hxxtp://www.carswithoutborders.com/ for additional info on importing to Canada

fax all necessary documents to the boarder crossing of yer choice 72 hours before you get there with the car (& bring photo-copies of said faxes - they could not find mine)

prepare to pay gst at boarder, then ya got 45 days to get a safety-check & take form 1 to Ontario Ministry Office & prepare to pay pst

i bought my 80 from Ohio , in Jan 2007...quite easy as long as paper work in order

I don't mean to hijack the thread... but I am looking into importing an older Vette (68-72) and found some info regarding Excise Tax on Fuel_Inefficient cars.

"The excise tax on fuel-inefficient vehicles is calculated on the basis of the weighted average fuel consumption rating as determined in accordance with information published by Natural Resources Canada. For purposes of this tax, the weighted average fuel consumption rating is calculated by combining 55% of the city fuel consumption rating with 45% of the highway fuel consumption rating. Automobiles that have a weighted average fuel consumption rating of 13 or more litres per 100 kilometres will be subject to the excise tax at the following rates:

•at least 13 but less than 14 litres per 100 kilometres, $1,000;
•at least 14 but less than 15 litres per 100 kilometres, $2,000;
•at least 15 but less than 16 litres per 100 kilometres, $3,000; and
•16 or more litres per 100 kilometres, $4,000."

The older Vettes have around 12-15 mpg rating. Does this mean, I will have to pay $4,000!!!!

I believe that applies to newer cars...not older ones.

For example, this did not apply to my '98.

But your 98 probably gets 7 L / 100 km.

good question...

brought my 80 over in January 2007 so it was "gst" back then.

i would expect a phone call to any boarder-crossing would answer that question.

Seeing as the feds collect HST I would expect that you'll have to pay the 13% at the border.

Of course what would they do if you drove it over at Windsor but lived in Winnipeg? Hmmm....

Or my 69. They only cared about a/c and did not even look in the car to confirm.

*NB The car won't pass inpsection if the accesories don't work. Make sure you have functional 4 ways and window washers. My AZ car did not and took me a month to get her legal.

5% at the border, the rest when you go to the MTO.

I know it was when it was split but I thought it may have changed now that we have HST.
