Apex at Mosport Sept 1
Most of you know about the Marcelli Track Day at Mosport on Sept 1.
John had sent out a reminder this morning and I replied to it with a comment about the post ALMS Apex day last year..........again some of you will remember that day......... I know I did a personal best time... (only to have Rob go out and beat it on the next session....)
Below is what I posted in response to John Mahler's email blast this morning:
For those of you looking for those extra few seconds or tenths, (I understand there is no timing at these events), the Apex date after the ALMS weekend last year was the absolute quickest we had ever done at Mosport. I think it was a combination of perfect weather and the fact that the track was so rubbered in from the race event on the weekend. Cars stuck really well and I know we were doing at least 1.5-2.0 seconds a lap over previous marks…….. just another incentive to get up there for this event.
For those that missed it here is the initial email blast on the event.
Good Day Auto Enthusiasts,
We would like to invite you to a special track day. Kyle Marcelli, Canada’s leading sports car racer will take time out from his busy ALMS schedule of testing and racing to host this event. And Kyle will have his car with him; the number 89 LeMans Prototype Challenge car will be available for close inspection and photography.
But this is not a static day. Mosport’s 2.5 miles of rolling hills and 10 fast turns will be available to drive in your car. This is a driver’s education and lapping day. These are not parade laps, this will be an opportunity for you to get professional driver coaching from Kyle and his instructor team. The instructor crew is experienced with many years of racing/driver training.
You will enjoy a light breakfast at the track, a catered lunch and refreshments throughout the day.
Your day will consist of a short classroom session about the physics of what the car is doing and why. Then you will be on track in your own car with one of the pro divers coaching you from the passenger seat. These intense learning/driving sessions will continue all day with suitable breaks for you and your car to refocus.
Should you desire, Kyle or one of our instructors will take you for a lap or two in your car. A professional photographer will be on hand to create a photo disc of the day for you at no charge. Get photos of you, Kyle and his race car as a wonderful memento of the day.
To ensure your safety we will have a team of Mosport corner marshals and an EMS team on hand.
Join us for a fun day of learning, meeting and greeting other sports car fans and pro drivers.
Spaces for this track day are limited, and at $350, we expect to sell out quickly. Please call or email to make your reservations. A 50% deposit will be required to lock in your spot.
If you are joining us for Kyle’s Track Day and you would like to see the ALMS race as well, on Sunday, August 29 at Mosport, we can offer you discounted tickets to the event.
Join us to meet Kyle and see what has made him the rising star of sports car racing in North America. See why companies like: Lafarge, DynaPep Energy, Rite Aid Pharmacy, Barrie Trim & Mouldings Inc., GP Masonry & Landscaping Supplies, SimpleFuelTax.com, Simcoe Building Center, Century Craft Custom Home Builders Inc., Spherion Staffing Solutions, Aplinestars, River Rock Financial, Solutions Plus, and Horsepower Entertainment Group are sponsoring Kyle in his quest to be the best.

Hmmm
Well I was going through some stuff in the garage and I found some brake pads with a bit of meat left so I am thinking I might try to get out one last time for this event.
I don't think my decision to call it quits for track days in general has changed but using up some pads and tires on the track as opposed to putting them in the landfill or trying to sell them for a few bucks seems like a prudent thing to do.
Also I have never driven on slicks before so I will switch from the GY runflats to the Hoosiers for the last day......... should be a neat experience....... a few other things have to come together for this to happen but with some help from Devon and if the stars align I will be out there with you guys on Wednesday........
Looking forward to seeing you there!!

Wicked pics! Geez, Mister Whiner had to have more of his posted than anybody else!!
Well the good news ... I think? ... is my diff seems perfectly FINE . It seems the whole drivetrain was just getting HOT, and the tranny burped some fluid out the vent, which would explain the smoke and the smell. As for the noise? I put the street tires/brakes back on, and it's perfectly smooth/quiet!?! SO, I'm honestly thinking it's just the noisy Nittos!! (... and until I address the drivetrain temps, maybe I'll have to limit the car to ~20 minute sessions MAX?).
I've blown gears in my Camaro before, so I recognize the light "grinding" noise. This sounded so darn familiar, I was convinced the diff was coming apart ... but alas, it seems my EARS need the tune-up!!
Fun day, kids!
