Default Storage idea - thoughts?

Hi guys,

I'm getting tired of the hassle and expense of swapping my 2 hobby cars between my house and a nearby garage I rent. So next month I'm planning to keep both my babies home where they belong!

Problem is I only have a 2-car garage with lots of other things like bikes, garbage, shovels, and other stuff that gets dumped there temporarily. I don't want to invest in a lift - but am thinking of getting some better shelving, hooks, and other innovative things to maximize space.

QUESTION: One idea is having someone build me a perfectly sized storage rack, maybe a 6-poster, that I can drive my C4 under and store stuff on top. That would be a perfect solution - either wood or steel. I'm no craftsman and I want it to look decent so I'd have it made by someone. Anyone ever seen anything like that? If so love to see a pic.

why not build overhead shelving from the ceiling of your garage? Is it open or dry walled? As long as you can get access to some solid structure to secure the framing for your shelving youre golden. Think of it like a drop ceiling only with access for storage and as long as you have some nails, a saw, measuring tape and a level it shouldnt take you more than an afternoon. You can use a sheet of plywood as the base or floor for your shelf.

Hey Giggity that's a great idea. My garage has no drywall - it's an 80s built suburban 2-storey. The "loft" section has plenty of big braces going across so plenty to hang from.

Only drawback is that it would be permanent and if I went to sell couldn't take it with me. And I'd probably have to remove it before selling but that's not too hard. Chances are we are here for the next 5 years anyway.

Like I said I'm no builder and I'm certainly not parking my vette under anything I built myself! But a day's work of a local guy isn't too expensive. Cheaper than storage!

Costco and others have metal ceiling storage units. As long as the trusses can handle the load then you can hang them up there. On the sides of the ceiling would be best for truss load as more load would transfer to the walls.

If you're looking for overhead storage there are metal racks that come in various sizes where as you can easily adjust the hight of each shelf. See photo below, it was taken for the garage heater but you can see some of the metal racks overhead:

If you build it out of wood, use screws to assemble it and then it will be much easier to disassemble in the future.

whatever you do in terms of hanging shelving units from your garage's ceiling, MAKE SURE it is up to spec regarding the load. Often the trusses are interconnected by weak braces, etc. Also, if you have any such structures hanging, your garage will likley not pass house inspection, as it is not "to code" (been there done it folks...). a bigger deal would be something like that collapsing on your vette (or your head), so check and double check for load! just my 2 cents

I have a barn that I rent.It has 500 squarre feet of floor area.It holds 2 cars with a fair amount of space for all my stuff.I have a lot of spare parts.I found things were getting crowded the other day and I built a small second floor as I already had V shaped rafters. All I had to do was nail down some 1/2" plywood. The first thing I did was clear out junk that I havn't touched in 2 years. It was hard to throw some of the stuff away but I really wanted to clear some space.Next.I put stuff in boxs and labeled the boxs with what was in them and made a list on a clip board or what parts were in which box with a number for each box.I then wrote on the rafters below the boxs which numbers were in that area.I plan on buying an attic stairway. It took about 8 hours but I now have a lot of space now for more junk.LOL
Good luck.
