He's a bit away from you at Hwy 27 and Albion but this gentleman has done stuff for me and other boaters on starters, alternators and generators. He's super "old school" knowlegable but also has a lot of modern (and some big) industrial electric motors, generators etc. in his impeccable shop.
Get yourself a commutator stone and clean the slip rings. Build up of dirt or oxidization will cause the generator to fail to start or perform well. Try that before spending money on service.
Generators were one of my responsibilities in the army and since. I've had a few come to life just by doing that. Usually I pull the brushes then run the engine while applying a little pressure with the commutator stone.

Very good advice. Especially on a boat where oxidization is 24/7.
Nice old boat.
