Keeping the virus might be better than the free advice given out here so far.....
Agreed... switching operating systems maybe a bit drastic, and better done if you can try them out on another computer, but I've swiched four of my work and personal computers to ubuntu and haven't regreted it at all. Still have a windows server and laptop is dual boot with win7.
I too would try to remove the virus first. Seams at least one user had success going into safe mode, doing a system recovery. But I would try running malware bytes first. Here is a link to do some further research... http://lmgtfy.com/?q=java+6+virus+removal

You see, right there, that's it Jeff. Most users just want to use a computer, could care less how it works and even less trying to make it work after a virus...
"safe mode, system recovery, malware, dual boot" all the language most users don't understand and don't want to understand.
I know you know this stuff Jeff, but plenty of people are like me, they just want the "technology" to work

Excuse me, but my koolaid is getting warm here
I hear ya Mike, the Macs are easier to use, but it comes at additonal cost, which is worth it to some. I have used many Mac's over the years but didn't have to pay for them. Ubuntu is a good comprimise, easier to use than windows, runs on almost any hardware and costs nothing.
When considering switching though, you need to have a good look at applications, there is a free linux alternative to most apps but some apps only have a windows version. An issue for me was HPTuners, only has windows drivers for the hardware interface.
