Piston Slap
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After I have taken my `06 C6 to My Dealership"s" (My favourite one had to closed when the S**t hit the fan a couple of years ago and to the one that took over their franchise) I took it a Corvette Specialty Garage to have them to see if they could determine a ticking noise when the engine is cold.
They determined is most likely is "Piston Slap".
The first dealership said they could not find anything. The Second dealership said "Yes we hear it but nothing to worry about.
My extended warrant is now over and the Corvette Specialty Garage tell me "To live with it, Put in a New engine or sell the Vette.
No wonder the Dealerships and GM didn't want to address the problem.
Any one else have this problem with their engine? After looking into it further I find it is a fairly common problem.
This one of the answers I recieved.....
There's no particular bulletin on piston slap for 06 models that I could see.
FWIW here's what the serivce manual has to say.
1.Install the correct oil filter.
2.Inspect the thrust bearing and crankshaft.
3.Repair or replace, as required.
Damaged or faulty oil filter bypass valve
1.Inspect the oil filter bypass valve for proper operation.
Seriously, most dealerships can only work within a scope of what they know the manufacturer will cover under warranty....I've been involved in that for over 25 yrs.....
I had a similar situation with my C5, just before the 6 yr GMPP warranty expired, I took it to 2 dealerships to diagnose a slipping trans, I even left it at WN for a whole week and they had everybody and their friends check it out and said there was no prob with the trans.....this was just as I was putting it away for the winter....when I took it out of storage in the spring, a week after the warranty expired, the trans failed big time! WN offered me no help, I raised hell with GM, had a work order from WN stating trans in good shape with no issues found, and less than 200 km (5 months)later it failed.... I eventually got it covered though....via policy.....
They initially offered to cover parts in I paid the labour, and then labour if I paid the parts....told them I'd go to that corvette specialty shop and get a nice HD RPM trans installed for less....
