Randy and smartphone in the same sentence? Now there's an oxymoron if I ever read one.

$45 ish bucks at Autozone
The Bluetooth obd scanners are hit and miss. I've not been able to find one that works reliably with an iPhone. I don't know about droid phones.

I picked up one from E Bay a couple of years ago for under $25, with free shipping, and it works great! It doesn't have a lot of buttons on it, but it still gets the job done and it not only tells you the error code, but it gives you what that code means also (so you don't need to go looking that code up in a book or online or something)
Here is a current link for one just like it:

What surprised me most about that cheap code reader was the fact that it reads American cars, Asian cars and German cars! A lot of expensive code readers will not do all three! And that's important to me since I've got a Corvette, BMW and a Honda.

OBDII (2) is model year 06 and up. OBDI (1) prior to 06.
Mine works in the Ram with the cummins diesel but does NOT work in my '13 Passat. My scanner wont even power up in my MIL's '04 chev pickup.

Your dates are 10 years too late Mike. ODBII was introduced in '96.

If that's the case I wonder why my MIL's 04 Chevy pick up won't even power on the code reader. Odd.

No power on the ODBII port is often caused by a blown fuse.
