Default Rivnuts question

My question is, how does one get the rivnuts to expand in a hex hole ? Obviously it is a blind hex hole and no way to hold it, unless, the rivnut is a snug fit in the hole and screw a bolt into it and hopefully it expands from there ? I have never used them before and they ain't cheap, so i don't wanna mess it up.
did my due dilegence and did a search on the forums and googleized it also.

Thanks Al

You need the tool to set them easily; they set very much like a normal rivet does. I use them quite frequently. Princess Auto sells both imperial and metric tools for the smaller common sizes:

Al

If you can't use the tool because of location or don't have one - the biggest challenge is preventing the rivnut/nutsert from turning on the mandrel bolt when you are trying to tighten the nut to collapse the nutsert - pretty hard to do.

You can try pushing the nutsert against the metal you're trying to install it into - good luck with that.

I recently had a similar situation (I couldn't get the nutsert tool into a tight space) but was able to clamp some vice-grips on the back of the nutsert locking it onto the threaded mandrel (bolt).

You can try to pre-expand the nuserts/rivnuts slightly and see if you can get enough of an interference fit to drive them so they don't turn.
Lots of grease , multiple washers under the nut and you may be able to "pull" them in (expand them).

Depends on the "backing" mat'l strength - you could even Loctite the nutsert (with low strength loctite) to the mandrel and then break it loose after the rivnut is fully installed ?
Going into a hex hole that could work okay ?!

If you're doing more than one nutsert - and if you can use the tool - don't fight it get the tool (hand / manual one not pneumatic).
They are pretty cheap compared to the aggravation it'll save you.
