Default Windsor border crossing

Anybody crossed over at Windsor recently? I did it a few years ago and it was a nightmare with all the construction before the bridge. Google maps is telling me it will cut 70kms off my trip but I don't want to get stuck in construction for an hour. Fort Erie is longer but usually flows well.

Did you consider crossing at Sarnia? May be an extra 15km but I would think that crossing is less busy.

Dave I cross at Windsor all the time.
The road construction to the bridge is pretty well complete.
Lots of truck traffic, but its moving pretty well lately.

I have an app called "Border Wait Times". Not 100% perfect but I'd say most of the time it's right on the mark. Also there is other online info.

If you have another person in the car, have them check each crossing point just before it's time to make a decision on which way to go.

I can be at Fort Erie by 6:30am so traffic should be light, would be at Windsor or Sarnia around 8 or 8:30 could be busier

Scube, where are you heading? I have not crossed in a while at Windsor but like Mark says the work is almost complete. I find that drive along the south shore of Lake Erie from Fort Erie to be long and boring. If you go the Windsor way you can look at Kathleen windmills and see your tax dollars at work.

I don't think Sunday morning will cause you any issues. Travel safe.

Scube: If you are at Fort Erie by 6:30 AM, you will be the ONLY car crossing (may be a few Trucks)... From there you will hit Knoxville in about 10 Hrs, depending on Speed & Fuel/Pit stops along the way.
The Tail of the Dragon, is not far from there...Enjoy the 300 Turns in 11 Miles.....

Go with Fort Erie. I found the drive from there to be much more pleasant and your overall speeds (higher US speed limit) makes up for the time you spent on the 401, the windsor crossing and OPP threat.

I live in Windsor. Bridge construction is now complete on the American side. Theres actually construction in downtown Detroit at the tunnel. Windsor side on both is clear. Im confident that if you cross before 9am, both will be smooth sailing.

I cross often and almost exclusively at the Ambassador bridge.

Use the border app if you want, but even busy times at they'll have most or all the booths open and I've never been delayed getting through (knock wood.) Have paperwork ready, yours and the rear window (if you have one) fully down, interior lights on if it's dark, smile, sunglasses off, make eye contact, listen, be honest, clear, collected and concise - through you go. While I miss the simpler days when only occasionally were you asked your driver's license or birth cert - I still really respect and enjoy the freedom the US/Canadian border exemplifies.

Sure it's a long, boring haul, especially south from London. At least the 401 are smooth and well maintained - MUCH- better than the NY/PA or MI Interstate options, specially from Flint and down - yikes!

I'm also more comfortable staying in Canada as long as possible (hey - "stuff" happens) and while some may argue this my expectation and observations are the OPP are more likely be more reasonable than State Troopers targeting someone out of state and unlikely to fight the charge.

Really wish 401 was posted at 130 but too many drivers cannot be trusted even at 100. Still, traffic speeds of 115-120 are common so relax and keep speed fast enough remain vigilant. Using traffic and watching for OPP helps

At least now once you get to Windsor the 401 merges onto the exceptional new ($1.4 billion! ) Herb Gray Parkway. Five minutes later you're on Huron Church, then up and over the Ambassador (you pay on the other side.)

A breeze - tried the others but wouldn't bother.

Crossed at Windsor on the way down, no issues or wait. On the way home we crossed at Fort Erie, about 20 min wait.
