Where do I start?
I just bought my first vette on Monday (01 mag red/oak vert). The car paint is in good shape but it does have some swirls and scratches. There are also a few tiny stone chips.
Assuming I have nothing to wash/detail my new car, and know nothing about doing it, where do I start? What equipment/products do I need to buy?

everything you need

First I would strip the wax with denatured alcohol or blue dawn. then claybar the car until it feels like glass.
next apply some zaino swirl remover, then polish with Z5. proceed to Z2 pro and finish off with Z8.
search this forum and you can get info on many products and techniques. here is my zaino'd 69....
ps- invest in a porter cable random orbital buffer. worth every penny!

A few other good sites for ordering stuff are...
www.properautocare.com
www.autogeek.com
www.pakshak.com (Great Waffle Weave towels for drying your vette)
www.dftowel.com (for Micro Fibre towels)
P.S. No affiliation with any of these sites.

but I do all mine by hand...
...but yes, you to can have a car that looks like this...
Good luck,
Peace

Claybar to remove surface contamination
Wash
Polish with abrasive and/or cleaner to remove swirls, oxidation, etc.
Wax or Seal
Best to offer sound advice and allow the client to pick the products of his choice. I would only add that a Porter Cable Random Orbital is a fine piece of equipment to consider purchasing.
If you would like to visit us, where at www.autogeek.net (not com) and offer a forum discount on most everything to the tune of another 10% off. Good luck .

1. wash with dawn dishwashing liquid to remove old wax.
2. use 3M Fine Cut rubbing compound (#39003) with a terry towel, to remove the scratches, swirls, water marks.
3. you might go over the car with 3M 9009 afterward (swirlmark remover), but for now I don't like it, so I skip that step, with good results.
4. Seal with Meguiar's NXT (as your sealant)
5. some time, I'll give a try with Meguiar's #26 carnauba wax and see if that adds some gloss if put over the NXT, but for now I'm happy with NXT alone.
for future washings, just use NXT car wast (won't strip off old wax or sealant), then NXT.
