Can anyone tell me if you can go out and just buy a clay bar without buying the whole kit? If so, where and how much? Does it have to be a certain kind of clay? Thanks.

You might have to go to a few stores but you should be able to find clay only without having to buy a kit.

I was on the same search today. I couldn't find just a bar anywhere on the shelf. The local NAPA had a part # for a clay bar only, but couldn't have it until Friday. I just ended up buying a Mother's kit for $16.99.
for a kit, I just get meguiar's - you'll end up using the entire bottle of quick detailer anyway, after 4 or 5 clay treatments -- you really do need it.
if you only want clay, stay with autogeek -- that's the best price you'll find. and excellent customer service. The Geek ROCKS !!
I picked up a Mother's kit to do mine cars this weekend. Was a little disappointed in the size of the clay bar. About the size of the original pak of Dentine chewing gum. Expected something about the size of a deck of cards. I think I'll be stopping by the auto paints place to see what they have next time.
