Default Clay bar?

I've seen quite a few mentions of clay bars and "clay the car"... What does that mean?

Thanks for any clarification!

A claybar removes embedded contamination from paint.

After your vehicle has been thoroughly washed, you gently glide the clay over the surface using a clay lubricant. When the clay becomes dirty, fold and knead the clay to expose a fresh surface.

It's really simple. Just use light pressure and common sense.

You would be amazed at the improvement if your finish has never been clayed before.

Next time you wash and dry your car, put your hand in a plastic bag and *gently* rub each panel...if you feel a "gritty" surface, you need to clay.

I'll give that a try. I've never heard of a clay bar, but then I've never owned a car like my '98.

Thanks for your help!

You should be able to find a Clay Magic or Mother's claybar kit at Auto Zone, Advance Auto, etc. for under $15.

I agree, you will definately notice the difference. Before claying, you will feel all of the small debris, etc on the surface of the paint. After being clayed, it should feel like ice.

Make sure to use plenty of the spray detailer that comes in the kit as a lubricant.

Is there any preferred brand of clay and clay lubricant to use?
Or are all claybars the same?

Clay comes in different grades. You should use the finest grade you can find, if your paint is still in good condition...
Here is some good info for you...

There are a couple of grades of clay (medium and aggressive), but all clay comes from 2-3 manufacturers, so there's not much difference overall.

Most off-the-shelf clay you find, will most likely be fine grade anyway. But like I said, depending on you paint condition, other grades are available online for different applications.

There was a clay that I was interested in but I can't remember the brand. It also had a lubricant I think it was a black with red markings on bottle.

Mother's, Meguiar's, and Clay Magic are the most common clay kits found in auto parts stores.
