Default 7424 Speed Setting Help

Going to use Menzerna IP and FPII, the directions say to set the speed at 3.5-4. I notice many use a setting of 5-5.5, what are the pros and cons of each speed setting? Does a higher speed work better?

I just got my 7424 and the Menzerna IP and FP but I have not used it yet. I believe the difference in speed has to do with 1.) what pad you use and 2.) if you did IP prior to FP or directly to FP. I would follow the directions recommended by Menzerna for the 7424, and be sure to adjust speed for proper Yellow vs Orange vs white pads. I plan on using the 3.5 to 4 setting with an Orange pad and IP and see what results. Pls update on your findings. I will do same.

Anyone have more experience on pads vs speed of 7424????

I prefer the 5.5 speed. I also do not like using a pad any more aggressive than the white polishing pad and in severe conditions the orange pad. I find that the orange and especially the yellow pads create too much micro marring. If a white pad with my PC does not remove what I am trying to I go right to a rotary. I realize everybody does not have that luxury but I just want to make you aware that the more aggressive pads do leave some mm'ing that is difficult/time consuming to remove.

I had the same ?. I found this online.

The severity of the micro-marring depends on your tools and the contaminants present. Here are the ten most frequent causes of micro-marring (swirl marks):

1. Polishers/buffers with the incorrect pad or an untrained operator;
2. Harsh polishing compounds and paint cleaners;
3. Towels and applicators containing polyester threads;
4. A dirty chamois or a chamois that has not been properly maintained;
5. Wiping down a dusty or dirty car with a dry towel;
6. A dirty car duster or a car duster used on a car with too much dirt on the surface;
7. Not keeping your wash mitt or sponge properly rinsed;
8. Automated car washes with brushes and other wipers;
9. Not rinsing your car completely before washing, or not washing your car thoroughly before drying; and
10. Using a car cover when the car or the cover is not clean.

Micro marring is millions of super fine scratches in this case caused by an aggressive pad. When looked at closely when caused by a ROB actually look like little tiny X like scratches. From a distance it is just a milky look. A lot of the time it is actually hard to notice unless you compare what you buffed to an area that has not been touched, on black the black will not look as black as it should. I will usually put a small piece of tape down one of the seams or someplace on the edge so I an compare what I have done and make sure I removed all the mm'ing.

Guess I'll follow the instructions Going to start with the orange pad and Menzerna IP, then white pad w/FPII. Will post my results.

I use 5.5-6. Anything lower and you won't notice any results. The directions are probably just playing it really safe.

Also, the directions are general, not custom for your car. It seems that the clearcoat on the Corvette is really tough to fix...but really easy to mark up...go figure.

So that is probably why most Corvette owners here have used a higher setting...

Save yourself some time, and start out between 5-6.

ShockwaveTXB is right on target. It'll take you a year to get any results with the PC at a setting of 3 - 4, even with an orange pad. That works fine on some other makes, with soft clearcoat, but try it and you'll see - nothing will happen. For me, I don't bother turning the machine on unless it's at 5.5 or 6.

Everything Shocky said is correct. Menzerna can't tell you one set of instructions that work for hundreds of different paint and clearcoat types out there. There's no harm in starting "low and slow", but you'll see ...

The danger here is MEGA-MARRING -- when you have the PC at a setting of 3, and you FALL ASLEEP waiting for anything to happen, then you drop the PC on the hood, leaving a HUGE GOUGE in the paint!
