Default Clay bar

Well, I used the Mothers brand clay bar kit today & I must say it did come out nice. My car only has 16k miles on it, but there was a big difference after I was done. The color is much deeper & alot of the tiny specs of "whatever" are gone. It would be hard to tell using a digital camera, so no pic, you'll just have to take my word for it.

I clay bar my Vette once a year and my daily driver twice a year.

Clay bar does wonders on the paint. Last time I did mine, it turned out great.

Brings Rise to a perhaps STUPID question?

Clay bar - Clay is clay, yes/no? I've often wondered what would happen by going to a hobby / craft shop and getting a 10 pound block of 'clay' for about $3.00

What makes different clay, different clay?

Meh, I wouldn't use hobby clay on your car. Just stick to the stuff made for cars.

The only real problem I have with the "kit" is, they say theres enough clay for 3 full car bodies......but I used almost the entire bottle of lubricant on my Vette alone!

I didnt see any of the lubricant by itself on the shelf either

I believe that the lubricant is the same stuff as the "Quick Detailer" spray. If not that exactly, then someone hopefully will chime in with what you can use. But I do know that there is something that you can buy without having to buy another Clay Bar kit. Or just post in the Car Care section. They will know

I used the Griots clay bar last week. Then used the Best of Show Wax that came with the kit. The car looks good, but it looked good before I used the clay. I can't tell that much difference. Maybe, my car didn't need it. Don't know.

Try two to three teaspoons of dish washing detergent in one gallon of water. Transfer the solution to a clean spray bottle. All you require is a solution which allows the clay to slide over the surface as opposed to sticking to the paint. Since you will be washing the car after you clay, the detergent is already on the car. I would personally rinse the clayed areas immediately after claying. Don't get ahead of yourself. Do this in the shade.

Regards,

Grant

If you're not comfortable with dish washing detergent, use car wash detergent instead.

Default Dawn Will Remove All Wax

As others have posted use some car wash soap and water in the spray bottle as a lubricant. DON'T USE DAWN or any other dish soap that removes grease, this will remove all your wax too! Dawn is well known in the detailing world as an efficient wax remover, you can use it if you're changing brands and want to remove the old stuff from your paint. Of course, if you're going to wax after clay anyway it might make little difference - just be aware of what you're doing at each step.

I thought the purpose of using a clay bar was to bring the surface down to the clear coat before applying wax or polish. Is this not correct?

That's why I use dawn, to take everything off and start new each year. Followed by the clay bar and DAWN is 2-3 coats of Zaino!!

I used the Mothers clay bar, too and really couldn't see any diference. I guess I didn't need it either. I tried it on my DD S-10 and it didn't remove the spots on the hood. I think it has gone deeper into the paint than the clay can remove. But I do like the Mothers wax. Easy on, easy off.

I used the mothers clay bar system right before CI7, looks awesome, and great price too! after clay barring a section, I ran my fingers over that section and an untouched section and there was definitely a smoother surface on the clar bar side- I'm convinced! Here's a photo(although it was almost dusk, it didn't come out very good)....
