I was outside washing the car the other day, and it was only 45 degrees. So, I decided to put on some rubber gloves to help keep my hands warm. I'm using "rubber exam gloves" and they work great! You can still hang on to towels and stuff and have some level of control over them, PLUS your hands don't get dirty and/or COLD!
My method is to boil a kettle of water while I am gathering supplies, and moving the car outside, then I use the hose to fill the bucket halfway, and create suds, then add boiling water. I keep the water temp around 70-80 degees so the temp difference won't hurt the car, and it lets me keep the feeling in my fingers.

You'd be surprised at the amount of protection those gloves give, even though they aren't very thick, they keep the COLD water off your hands. :seeya
