Has anyone ever buffed curb rash out of a wheel lip? I can buy a new wheel, but i thought this might make for an interesting experiment. Any ideas or previous experience?
-Chris
First step would be to strip away any remaining clearcoat from the damaged area. Then file, or sand down the area with progressively finer grit (220, 320, 400) paper. Then break out the buffing wheels with compounds. Once you've polished it up and you're satisfied with the repair, reapply some clear to the area.
It's not too difficult on a large piece like a whole wheel or metal trim, but it might get a little dicey on a small area of damage.
I'd take it to a professional wheel repair shop and let them handle it. A lot cheaper than buying a new wheel. But first thing, are they painted or chrome? It makes a big difference with some repair shops as chromes usually have to be sent offsite.
I met the guy onsite at a car dealership, $80 and 45 min later I was on the road. Was a no brainer in my case and you can't even see where the repair was done.
I refinished my turbines last year and clear coated them. I wet sanded some road rash spots and it made a big improvement. Mine are aluminum wheels though.
