Default What do you use to clean the inside barrels of your wheels?

Wheels get stained with metallic debris from autox and DEs, rust, etc. Don't think pinky-lifted touchless soapy thingys are going to get it done. So, what do you use for heavy-duty cleaning?

Have a good one,
Mike

Did my CCW Big Street Classics yesterday.

Simple Green, ScotchBrite (lots) and tons of elbow grease. These wheel aren't polished on the inner barrel and turned out really well.

Yeah, they'll be off the car for the scrubbing.

Thanks, and have a good one,

You can do a touch-up with swiffer dusters since they come on long handles. You can do the backs (C5) easily, but not the fronts due to larger calipers.

Great question, I've been meaning to ask it as well. I have the original polished aluminum thin spokes and have some ugly pitting and buildup on the barrels of mine. Short of sending them out somewhere to be refinished, can they be somewhat restored as a DIY project? They've been like this since I bought the car and it's one of those things that has bothered me more as time goes by. I've been thinking of buying replicas but if I can salvage these myself I'd love to give it a try.

I use Frankie the super gerbil with specialized steel wool shoes. He can literally clean on the run.

The wheels are clear coated, so I use regular car wash on them. It will be a paint stir stick and a sponge until I take them off in the winter. Then I will wash them, clay bar, and rejex.

P21S Wheel Cleaner, EZ Detail Brush, and a good coat of Poorboys Wheel Sealant. Once soiled it should come off easier next time.

Did my CCW's using a Mother's polishing ball and Adam's Polish.

But - they weren't really dirty either.

Here's a trick for the front wheels. Get a couple of cheap microfiber towels (the thin, smaller ones like Wal Mart sells) and a couple of flat wood paint stir sticks. Wrap the microfiber around one of the wood paint stir sticks and apply some liquid detail spray. Then, just slide the stick between the spokes and use a sawing motion to clean the wheel barrel.

It's tight but it will fit between the caliper and wheel. Use a second one to polish the detail spray. Works on light to moderately dirty wheels. You can also move the car so the wheels make a 1/4 or 1/2 turn to make sure the area around the caliper is clean.

If the wheel is a real mess you need to remove the wheel and clean.

This method applies to factory 17" thin spokes. Your mileage may vary.

Mine are stock. I use a long handled bottle brush and a spray bottle of Simple Green. They seem to stay pretty clean if I do them once a week.

Get a nice toilet brush from the grocery store. The're not all the brissled variety, though you may need one of those at first. The inner barrels can be cleaned almost all the way around, except near the caliper, but if you do it every time the caliper won't be in the same place.
Some of those brushes are soft enough for chrome too!

If you can't take the time to pull the wheels, the EZ Detail Brush is the way to go......
