When I do cars for used car dealers for them to go on the lot, what most people do not know is that we spend easily twice as much time on the interior detailing as we do on the outside.

Here is a quick run down of detailing for an auto dealer:

1. First thing you always do is what is called a rough out, what this entails is bug removal, engine cleaned of dirt and grime, under side of hood cleaned of dirt and grime, tires cleaned, wheels cleaned, fender wells cleaned out, all tar and road debris removed from lower part of the car, paint washed, door jams roughed out with all purpose cleaner, trunk jams cleaned with all purpose cleaner. Those are the major parts of a rough out, there may be other things from time to time. After roughing the car is dried completely.

2. Next phase is the finishing phase. After the car is dry, we dress the tires, frame (on trucks), fender wells and engine. Most of the time dealers are not into paint perfecting so a one coat all purpose cleaner wax is applied next. We do buff out problem areas from time to time. We allow the wax to sit on the finish until we are done with the interior. Next is the inside which always takes longer than anything, you have to realize we are detailing average trade ins and rental cars (program cars) that usually have very dirty interiors. Carpet is vacuumed and shampooed and stains removed, carpet is dyed if stains will not lift, all stains from cloth seats are removed and if leather seats, leather is cleaned and dressed. All parts of the dash and door panels are cleanded and tooth brushed in the cracks and crevices for dust, dressing is applied to all parts of dash and door panels, door jams and wiped clean again and finshed. All rubber moulding is cleaned and dressed. Glove box is cleaned and dressed, storage areas are opened and cleaned and dressed. We usually start in the front and move the seats all the way back while doing the front and when the front is done, move the seats all the way forward and repeat the whole process listed above for the back of the car or truck.

3. After the entire interior is done, we do the windows, clean all chrome if the vehicle has any, dress outside plastic if needed, wheels are final wiped, engine is final wiped and hood closed, trunked is cleaned like the interior and closed, and the last and final step would be to remove the wax and final hand buff.

This is just off the top of my head the way we do things, all cars are different and we employ different methods depending on the situation, what I have listed above is a general outline.
