Default Why clay bar?

Why do you need to clay bar if you are going to use a power buffer and fine scratch remover. Won't the buffing take off the same junk that the clay bar would?

The clay bar works better at getting imbedded crap out of the paint while polishing/abrasives work more at the surface. You will get more of a perfect surface if you start with the clay and then progress from there.

If you don't clay and let the machine/pad clean up everything, the harder bigger contaminants will ride in the surface of the pad and scratch the paint surface. One of the best ways in the world to create a swirled mess rather quickly.

Agreed. They are both abrasive, so a polish and clay work in a similar way (clay doesn't 'pull' brake dust particles) but as per above these particles, unlike polish will not deminish with friction
