Default My homebrew wax adventure!

So I've decided to give wax making a go!

I'm playing around with doing my own homebrew. Inspired by Bouncer's #22 and Rubish Boys :thumb:

I got most of my basic ingredients in and decided to give batch #1 and #2 a whirl. I'm still waiting on more ingredients but I decided to play around a bit to get the hang of it. I have so much damn time into researching the best combinations so I will be doing MANY test batches!!!

Here's some progress so far!

T1 Brazillian Carnauba wax flakes
White bee's wax
Turpentine for the solvent
Coconut oil

Those are what I have in right now and can make a basic carnauba wax. I have more stuff on the way!

'Nuba and beeswax melting

Melted!

Added oils and solvent

Everything melted time for cooling!

Now to wait! Onto batch #2!!!

Both batches were much too hard for a useable wax. But after breaking them up they melted nicely in my hands. They applied nicely but didn't cure fast enough (approx 17 min) So I need to soften them up a lot and get the curing time down to about 5-7 min

Batch #1
25g carnauba
30g coconut oil
10g bees wax
30ml Turpentine

Batch #2
20g carnauba
30g coconut oil
10g bees wax
35ml Turpentine

So here's a list of all the ingredients I have and will be using in my batches.

T1 carnauba flakes
white bees wax flakes
paraffin wax flakes
turpentine
coconut oil
red palm oil
orange oil
emulsifying wax
Montan wax
mango extract
sunflower oil
cantaloupe oil
honey dew extract
strawberry extract
pure glycerin
propolis
cinnamon bark oil
banana oil
oil of clove
cetyl esters
cetyl cocamide
almond oil
cinnamon oi

I'm hoping to have a great product, something that will last and withstand the elements as well as look amazing. I am expecting great results as I am using the same ingredients found in the top of the line Zymol waxes and I am getting great tips from some of the best wax makers out there!

Once I get a final formula I will be sending out some free samples to a few people who want to try it!

Stay tuned!

I am sure you have seen this kit offered by Dodo Juice, it allows the home brewer to make their own wax but stick within some proven ingredients. Not sure it will help the original post, but might help those looking for their first attempt.

Best of luck to all wax brewers ....

I actually decided to try making my own with my own formula and ingredients after doing the Dodo Juice Home Brew kit!

It's not too bad, just have to do a lot of research to see what ingredients will work best and the ratio's. LOTS of trial and error to be had.

I've posted this on 3 other forums and I ordered 15 .5oz containers for samples, so I'm going to be sending out 5 per forum! The only thing I ask is a completely honest review posted up in this thread and some pictures to go along with it!

Good luck with the wax. Heck I'd be willing to give it a try on my DD - it will be needing a wax job next month so a good time to try you product out. Let me know if you want to send me a sample.

It should hopefully be ready by then!

Batch #3 was a little better, slightly softer but still need to make it a little bit softer and cut down the curing time.

Tested batch #3 today, left a very slick, glossy finish, went on alright but still took way too long to cure. My paraffin wax came in today which will help soften the wax some as well as make it easier to apply. I'm going to wait until the rest of my stuff comes in later this week to make any more.

Tested out batch #4. Finally got it nice and soft, texture was very much like Swissvax Onyx. It went on very easily and cured within 10 minutes in 35 degree weather. Sorry for the low quality cell phone pictures, I will have some better ones in the sun tomorrow as well as a beading/sheeting test!

Comparison testing tonight. My home brew batch #10 VS Swissvax Onyx. So far everything from application to cure time and sheeting/beading are the same, if not better, then SV Onyx. Samples will be out next week to who ever is interested!!!

Tomorrow I will be testing my home brew, SV Onyx and AutoGlym HD on the hood of my daily drivers.

What jars do you guys like best?

1) http://www.specialtybottle.com/tinde...rtopcover.aspx

2) http://www.specialtybottle.com/tinde...tlugcover.aspx

3) http://www.specialtybottle.com/bluep...tedomelid.aspx

4) http://www.specialtybottle.com/clear...tedomelid.aspx

My favorites are #2 and #3. I ordered 1 of each to see them in person to figure out which one my final formula will go in.

I also ordered some AWESOME new ingredients to test out.

Silk Peptide, Polysorbate 60, Lanette, Glycol Stearate, Dimethicone, Cetyl Alcohol, PolyQuat-10LR, Titanium dioxide & Castor oil.

Silk Peptide is a highly purified grade of natural silk power, processed in such a way as to retain the original physical structure and chemical composition of silk. It's naturally reflective, hydrophobic and will leave an amazing slickness to the paint.

Glycol Stearate is the ingredient used to produce incredible pearlescent effects in paint. Using it in the wax will leave a pealescent hue to the paint work.

PolyQuat-10LR has many benefits. First, it causes the product to be drawn to damaged areas, for enhanced performance. Second, it creates a better bond for extended performance. Third, it offers glide, silkiness, and anti-static properties

Titanium dioxide is the most widely used white pigment because of its brightness and very high light refractive index, in which it is surpassed only by a few other materials in the world. Not only will it create a great shine and outstanding gloss but it also greatly helps in protection against harmful pollutants and acids that could get on your vehicle.

Dimethicone is more commonly know as Silicone oil. It make spreading the wax much easier and add a slickness to the paint once applied. It is formed from silica (sand and quartz silicas) which will not only create an immaculate shine but provide much more protection then an average wax.

Also what fragrant do you think would work best? The wax is going to be orange so I was thinking either mango, pineapple, orange, orange + vanilla, any others?
