Default Black Plastic

What is the best product to bring back black plastic to black that can last - tried several but it is only a temporary fix.

wolfgang exterior trim sealant, I tried this stuff about a month ago and its awesome stuff. Also makes the wheel wells look like new and not greasy like 303 does and doesn't wash off.

You need to consider a permanent trim restorer not a protectant. A protectant will only work until next serious rain or wash and normally streak. Products like G-Techniq Trim Restorer will repair faded trim and for a very long period of time.

^^^Exactly, my '05's black trim is proof with that stuff - more than a year under the hot Hawaiian sun.

Especially since Autogeek is now the dealer.

Previously tried the above mentioned stuff among others not mentioned - all waste of time and money.

I used Mother's back to black on some faded trim that connects the door to the window about two years ago and it is still black today. That's after driving in all kinds of nasty conditions everyday. Maybe I got lucky..

I was a Back to Black fan but I have now found the new Maguire's Ultimate Black works better.

yes this is what I am looking for - one question first - what about where the wax i used in the past is on part of the back? will it cover that? or do i need to remove that and if so how?

i am looking at the back trim on the bed of my F-150 truck

I have always used just a little "Mineral Spirits" on a rag to remove excess wax on black trim , rubber or plastic does not seem to do any harm but takes the wax right off easily, and then coat it with your favorite black restoring product.

If it was a wax it likely wore off, but I would use a heavy soap and consider using some APC to strip any residue left. You really want the best possible curing for longest protection and repair.

303 is more of a UV protectant, not a restorer of faded plastic.....

Great interior product, no doubt...

a protectant can temporarily restore the look to plastics but limited in lifespan and can run as water based. Great product and line but I too use it inside.

Well I learned something new today! So what product would I use to restore faded black plastic permanently?

unfortunately nothing other than perhaps a dye is permanent. There are however some very good restorers that should offer a year or more protection and good looks. G-technic is one, Solution Finish is another.

2 words.... FOREVER BLACK (google it)

I even used it on my daughters 2001 explorer sport trac that had the GRAY lower rocker moldings and gray front and rear bumpers..

( new tires and black rims and blacked out the trim for the murdered out look.... she's 16, first car...)

you use thier acid wash first to make sure really clean (concentrate you mix with water and I used a scotch pad-- didn't use gloves and didn't get burned)... I used blue painters tape to mask off any area near paint that I did not want to get it on... It takes time and attention to detail.... the results were a bit streaky so I called the company... he also makes BONDO restore black and it gets packaged with the bondo name... a bit thicker and bigger sponge.... I top coated the trim with the bondo restore black and they came out sweet.. also did my weather beaten chevy SSR running boards (They get all chalky white) It was over a year when I traded it in and they still were black... ( car might still be on Carmax site at the Nashville location if you want to see it...) I will try and find my pics of the job and post them here.... I think they are posted on the SSRfanatic forum though...
