I've read recommendations on the site to use Dawn to strip the old wax off. I was watching Autoweek on Velocity and Pat Goss said it takes the oils out of the finish(?).
Does it do more harm than good or as long as you don't use it very often, it's not a big deal?
Dawn was suggested in the past to remove 'nuba based waxes. Modern sealants and coatings that have cured properly are much more durable and its hard to measure if Dawn can actually remove all or even part of newer waxes, sealants, and coatings. What is noted is that Dawn has chosen not to market a car wash or wax remover and as such should be left in the kitchen as designed.
If you want to remove and old product and start fresh, then consider using a paint cleanser, polish, or a dedicated wax remover like those from 3M and Griots.
Don't waste your money. Just use dawn. It will not do any harm and you only need to use it once. If it did any harm we would have heard about it a long time ago. For 99% of the time it is all you need. You just want to remove from your paint any waxes, oils, etc. from your paint that might interfere with whatever your detailing with. For that Dawn does the job just fine. At one time Rejex was not marketed for cars either but it didn't stop anyone from using it on their car.

Dawn is effective for removing carnauba wax. Occasional use, once or twice a year, won't hurt.
The only thing that I would be afraid of if using more often is it drying out rubber parts like weather-stripping.
Then again, most products that are strong enough to remove wax and sealant are probably capable of some kind of adverse effect.

If you clay your car that WILL remove the old wax.
