I would like to know what types of air compressors you guy use in your garage. Is small better than big? I have a 2 car garage and space is a problem for me. I've already looked at Home Depot, Lowes and Sears. The 3-5 gallon compressors seem ideal but are the bigger(15 gallon) the way to go? My primary purpose would be to air up the tires, blow off water, dust(on the car), sportbike, etc.....
Or is it a waste of $$? I'm no mechanic so I don't pretend I will open a "Tire Kingdom" in my garage!
Also, thinking about a ceiling extention cord roll up but concerned about the cord bumping my show car...........
Ideas and comments are welcomed and pics of garages if you have one!
We have a Campbell Hausfeld compressor from Home Depot that is 12 gallons. We did a groud up restoration on our 1963 coupe in our garage and the compressor powered everything that we needed it to, besides the spray gun.
Thanks for the feedback.....really appreciate it. I really want a quiet compressor. My neighbors will complain if it's loud. I heard a small pancake one and it was VERY LOUD. May go bigger.... maybe 15 gallons.
I have a 15 gal. Craftsman cmpressor. Is a little loud but not too bad. Only paid something like $159 on sale for it. Use it for impact tools, nail guns and painting. I love it and wouldn't be without it.
I wouldn't suggest a pancake compresor if you want it to work on the car. It will constantly run to keep the regulated ptressure up. Just my .02 :seeya
I've got an old air tank (fill it from a compressor) that I've had for years, and I used to carry it to the gas station periodically to fill it. My needs were simple .. airing tires only , no painting, etc.
I bought a battery-operated Campbell Hausfeld compressor from WalMart. It will put out up to about 200 psi, which is more than enough to fill my tank (or to air tires, even without the tank) and it's very portable .. not much bigger than the Z06 compressor that came with the car. It also has a cig lighter connector on it, so I can plug in my little 12v car vac and use it without having to drain the battery in the car. Pretty cheap at about $40, and perfect for my needs.
Re: Choosing an air compressor...... (Jerry Velders)
All advice is appreciated....... still have not decided and still a little confused. I want to air up the tires in my sportbike and my SS and blow off dust and water off those too.
Or Home Depot offers a very small Campbell Housefield 2HP/4 gallon pancake style at 4.3 @ 40 PSI / 3.1 @90 PSI with a max of 125 max PSI and 3 year warranty for $200.00. This is a quiet compressor.
Or Home depot offered me a deal to buy the CH 3HP/4 gallon at 6.2 @ 90 PSI/7.6 @ 40 PSI with a 125 max PSI for $200.00(regular priced at $258.00)...... somwhat quiet also.
i first used a campbel hausfeld 13 gallon (home depot, $250). its good for what you want. if you get to the point of using air tools or paint guns though, you'll need more CFMs, and at that point, youre looking at 5 hp, two stage units. thats when youre talking close to a grand. just remember, the bigger compressor lets you do more and easier. if you dont need more, just get the smaller, more mobile unit.
