My '03 coupe is going to be a daily driver (that is, if ever my factory order gets processed). I intend to hand wash it (I certainly wouldn't trust it to a car wash) but how do I maintain the undercarriage? Being a daily driver it is going to experience snow and slush, and I certainly don't want to get that stuff caked on. What's your advice?
Treat it similar to the way that you wash your paint, except instead of car wash use some Simple Green Automotive. Rinse the undercarriage, scrub with Simple Green and a sponge or wash stick(brush on telescoping pole), and then rinse off the cleaning solution. It is rough work and your knees and elbows will probably get scraped up, but it is well worth it.
I have a daily driver in the same part of the country. In bad weather I don't do anything. In the spring, after the crud, salt & sand are gone I powerwash the undercarriage. If your car is in a garage, all the slush & snow melts at night. If it's outside all the time, I'd just knock the snow from the wheelwells. When the snow really gets flying, it can pile up on the radiator shroud, but I haven't had a problem with that so far. We've had mild winters since I bought mine in October of 00, so snow hasn't been much of a consideration.
It will be garaged. But I was concerned about what the salt (or whatever other chemical they use) might do. Maybe the melting process will wash most of it off. - Here's hoping for another mild winter :seeya
I wouldn't be driving it during the winter. Go out and buy yourself a pos third car for that. $1500-2000 will get you a reliable enough POS third car.
I wouldn't be driving that car during the winter either, it's too nice to be taking out on the snowy and slushy roads; and never mind the dreaded rock-salt. I strongly advise you to get a winter-beater.
I feel for you guys... My friends and family ask if I would ever move back (Mich).. Can't do it... It's Corvette time all year here.... When I lived in mich I had a Mustang cobra and bought a pos winter driver... best thing I ever did.. It kept the mustang in mint condtion and was well worth it... On those cold sunny dry days in Jan I would take the mustang out of the garage for a drive.. everyone looked cuz it was so clean and all the other cars looked real bad... :seeya
