Default Expel care

I just purchased a used C7 and when I got it home noticed that there is a clear coating on the bumper, 1/2 of the hood, Rocker panels and behind the front wheels. Don't know if it is Expel or another brand.

I plan on doing a clay bar and polish with my Porter Cable orbital buffer. There is limited info on whether or not it is safe to clay bar or polish the film. I don't think it is worth the risk but what about sealants? I usually use either Rejex or Four Star UPP. Does anyone have any good information about what can be safely done?

I have always avoided abrasives and buffers on my Expel. I also avoid clay bars with these, although some people have used them successfully. A spray detailer or a Clear Sealant like Zaino ZCS works well for me.

If it's Xpel, you can treat it like paint, just remember when claying to avoid coming from the painted surface to the Xpel to avoid the line. Otherwise you're going to spend hours cleaning those lines / seems in the film.

Technically if it is Xpel, it should self heal with hot water or in direct sun for minor damage so you shouldn't need to polish it too much f at all. It would be worth the time to investigate whether or not it is Xpel just to be sure and if so, there are plenty of Vids on line for proper care.

Instead of actual clay, I've used a nano-skin sponge which is a clay substitute and will not leave clay residue on the edge. When near the edge of the film, use a motion parallel to the line to avoid 'catching' an edge directly or obliquely. Once a year I use the Xpel cleaner, and the rest of the year it either gets washed with the rest of the car, or I use Chadwick's on the film if doing a detail spray wipe-down. I would think this could apply to any film product.

I would not suggest buffing on or polishing the film at all. You can make it real hazy pretty easily. Just wax and seal it like the paint but do not buff on it like the paint.

Default OEM Sealant

I've used THIS with great success on my last four vehicles that had XPEL Ultimate applied.
