Touch Up Paint
Anyone had experience in using this kind of stuff? I ran over an object on the highway and put two really small scratches low on the passenger side of the front end. Scratches are deep enough that I don't think that they can be rubbed out. Not really that noticable (except I can see them). Is the touchup thing an option or should I have the body shop do it (not looking forward to that)? Comments please - Thx
If you can feel it with a fingernail, then it's probably thru the clear coat. If it's not thru the paint, you could touch it up with a little clear. If it is thru the paint, then you can touch up with touchup paint. The trick is in what you do after you put on some clear or color coat. If you don't do anything, you'll end up with a visible paint blob. The traditional way to deal with it would be to use some 400-600-1500-2000 grit papers to smooth and polish the area, finishing with some polish. There are also products that will let you 'melt' the blob away with a solvent (lacquer thinner in a paste, I think). The touchup paints are typically lacquer, while the original paint and clear is polyurethane. Check out http://www.langka.com I've tried this product and it works pretty much as advertised. It doesn't harm the original paint, but does remove the touchup paint. It takes a little practice but it at least allows you to remove your mistakes.
