Default Meguiar's 8" pads no longer available...Now what?!?

Disclosure: I'm old school. Still use my trusty Porter-Cable 7424 (the OLD one, not the newer XP6 model).

I'm having a devil of a time finding anyone that sells the 8" pads. I'm in need of the W8000 and W7000 (cutting) pads.

AutoGeek has their version of the W8000 back-ordered and all I see on Amazon is Chinese junk that won't stay adhered to velcro backing plates (per the reviews I've read). And to add insult to injury, I recently reinvested in a new, really good 6" urethane backing plate (the other one was degrading after years of usage).

Do I have to resign myself to moving to the newer 6" or 7" polishing systems and can I use the 6" backing plate or will I require a new set-up? If so, can someone provide me with guidance on what to get, and where? AND, will my reliable 7424 require any new counterweights, mods, etc.?

THANKS CF!

Can't help you with 8" pads, but I can tell you that I wasted money on a smaller counterweight before I learned that they really only matter when using the PC for sanding wood and stuff. LOL

I run a newer 7424XP with a 5" vented backing plate. 99% of my pads are 5.5" foam and microfiber. But, I have run as large as 6.5" pads with no issues.

@FYRARMS, thanks for the response. The more I look this over, the more I'm bound to move to a 7" system and use my new 6" backing plate a little longer.

Autogeek has several Lake Country 8" and 7.5" pads on their website.

I only see those sizes for rotary polishers, not DA. All that I see for DA are 6.5". If you can provide a link then I'd appreciate it, thanks.

"The 7.5 inch pads may also be used with dual action polisher with a 6” backing plate."

Your using a 8" pad with a 7424? The 7424 struggles to remove defects with a 5.5" pad so I can't imagine it even working with a 8" pad. My suggestion would be to step down to a 5.5" pad and use what the machine is designed for. I personally own 3 7424's and only use them for intricate 3" correction work. I also utilize our Rupes polishers from 1" up to 6.5" but rarely go past a 5.5" pad due to the inability to finish a 6.5" pad down to a perfect finish with a 15mm or 21mm throw dual action. Your 7424 is a 8mm throw by the way.

Lake Country makes nice pads too. I believe I have only used them on my rotary, but they are good stuff.

Griots makes pads too - i tend to use their red ones to apply wax

Change your backing plate and go with a smaller pad, you will like how your PC performs with a smaller pad.
