I read a topic from a detailing professional here on the forum but now can't find it using the search function. There was a thread about using either wd40 or armorall in a warm engine compartment and leaving a few hours then presto...clean shiney engine area. Can someone enlighten me....Thanks
I rinse engine spray simple green let sit 4-5 minutes gently rinse off. warm engine about 5 minutes. spray armorall foaming tire shine on everything. shut hood 15-20 minutes later look in there and go COOL!!!!
I cleaned my engine last week, the first time it's neen cleaned in 6 years by the look of it. It will need a few more goes - but -
All the black plastic parts have come up poorly, they appear to have a clear coat on them which is 60 % falling off and the black looks faded..........I'm wondering if the previous owner sprayed laquer on everything at some point to make it look good ?
Or maybe something like the Armorall Foaming Tyre shine ?
What is the long term result from using the Armorall foaming tyre shine ? could this be what was used.....or is this the cure for my bad looking plastic ?
1. Spray down the engine compartment with the hose (I took off the fuel rail covers and made sure to get everything free of loose dirt and dust).
2. Then close the hood and start the car and let idle for about 5 minutes to warm it up and then shut it off.
3. Using Simple Green (Full Strength, no dillution), amply spritz everthing you want clean.
4. Close the hood and go drink a beer (or in my case, wash the Fuel Rail covers with hot water and Dawn and let dry).
5. Next spray out the engine compartment completely.
6. Spray Armour All or equiv over those same surfaces. Avoid the belts and wiring. Use alot on the fender covers and the radiator shroud.
7. Close the hood and go and Spray Armour All on the Fuel Rail covers.
8. Open the hood and reinstall the Fuel Rail covers and your done.
Won't take more that 20 minutes and your engine will look like it just came off of the showroom floor.
I followed this procedure -- except substituted Zymol Strik instread of Simple Green. Some people think Simple Green will react with aluminum if not completely rinsed away
Even though I tried to be careful about not directing the water blasts into any of the belt pullys, the next day, I developed the dreaded 'chirping cricket' under the hood.
After MUCH DEBUG, I finally identified the chirp was comming from the idler pully. I shot a little silicone lube into it and it's been quiet ever since.
