I finally got around to cleaning the engine bay on the Vette last week. I didn't have any degreaser around, but I did have a bottle of Greased Lightning Orange Blast. It said it worked as a degreaser, so I tried it. Now granted my engine bay wasn't too bad, but there was a ton of thick, caked on grease around the grease fittings on my upper control arms. Anyway, as soon as I sprayed this stuff on my motor, the dirt started running. I sprayed the whole engine bay down pretty heavily, then hit it with a hose. It came out amazing. Even the thick grease around the control arms disappeared and left smooth shiny metal. This stuff is cheap and works great. :)
Just make sure you don't sturate the engine electronics, that can lead to big problems. I like to use Saran Wrap to cover the ignition box, fuse panel, computer, and other engine electronics.
I used a grocery bag to cover the distributer. Everything else has a weather pack connector. Obviously I didn't spray the hose full blast on the ECM, but as long as you are careful there isn't much on a non LT1 car to worry about. If you have old wiring and/or broken connectors, it can cause problems though. :)
I've been told about some problems with Simple Green. the folks at Design Specialties suggested Scrubbing Bubbles. Tried it today but unsure of the results. Didn't have any grease build up, just oil film here and there. No rubbing done, just wanted to spray and wash. Not sure how SG would have done. Also not sure if I have unreal expectations but would like to win a show or two
