I am going to apply the 3M #39009 tonight in an attempt to reduce the number of swirl marks on my Vette. (I've got 3 coats of Z-5 to no avail.) I have a couple questions.
1. Should I use a cotton applicator or a foam applicator?
2. Should I apply in circles or back-and-forth and top-and-bottom?
Please note that I am applying by hand tonight as I do not have a polisher available.

~One mans opinion / observation~
I would use a terry cotton covered foam pad (applicator) this will give a little more ‘cut’
Never use circular movements; they will add swirl marks, everything in a straight line.
I assume you will polish with Zanio afterwards?
Let us know how things turn out

The bottle contains directions for both hand and machine application. For hand it recommends a firm circular motion. I did my Jeep this past weekend. Works as advertised. Probably a 90% reduction in swirls.
I had to hold off on giving it a try so that I could give it a good wash and prep. So, I'm going to give it a try tonight on a small area. I'll be sure to let you know how it turns out.
The key is to apply even pressure. IMO, this is almost impossible to do with an applicator as most of the pressure will be applied with your fingers and you'll end up with a car full of holographic marring. Instead, try using a terry cloth towel folded into 8ths so that it can be held firmly with a fist. Use wide circular strokes at first and as you work the product into the paint, use straight back and forth motions. Work the product until the surface is nearly clear and dry.
Also keep in mind that the SMR product will only work on very light swirls.
I tried it on small spot on the lower front quarterpanel.
My initial impression was that I may have actually caused more swirls with the 3M. I tried it again last night (If you haven't noticed, I don't have much time at home with work keeping me way too busy) and it looked like I got rid of the swirls I put in the night before, but I didn't see a marked improvement.
I wonder if this is because 1. I didn't apply enought pressue or 2. I didn't provide even pressure. I'm going to try to find someone in my area that has a orbital buffer that might be willing to allow me to try it.
Also, I've decided that I'm not going to do any more experimenting on the Vette and as soon as I can I'm going to try it on the beater.
I'll be sure to post my results. I do know that those swirls are driving me crazy!!! I'm pretty **** about the appearance of my vehicles and while I love driving the Vette, when I get out and see those swirls, I get frustrated.
I've got the same problem... And I've got the fix. Don't drive it on sunny days, Only when cloudy or raining and no one will notice.
ITS DRIVING ME FREAKING NUTS. :mad :mad :mad :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
