I wash every towel before I use it. You never know what they came in contact with during the manufacturing or packaging process.

Yes, various chemicals are used in the fabric manufacture and weaving process, so it is always the right thing to do to wash them first and be careful of your drying temps(low to air dry).
I have, in my travels through the MF world, discovered that some, and it depends on the manufacturer, will use Silicone as a lubricant on the fabric prior to actually weaving the towel.
