When a body shop uses a clay bar on your car they just hose the car down and then use the bar. Most of the products i have seen you need to buy a pre- spray and then clay the car -
Is it ok to just hose car down and use the bar.
Where can I buy just the clay bars and which is the best one?
Thanks
I don't feel that it's safe to use water only. It makes it too easy to damage the paint without proper lubrication. Most body shops don't properly care for paint.
Auto Zone carries Clay Magic clay kits...that's what I recommend.
Clay bar with a hand spray lubricant is the only way to go I use Wizards. What ever clay bar you buy it should say on the back
what they recommend for a lubricant just follow the directions.
Speaking from experience, if you do not keep the area very very wet/lubed, you will leave streak on your paint finish. If you do this, 3M Swirl Mark Remover will take care of removing them. To avoid the streaks...keep the area you are claybarring very wet.....Did I say that twice,,,,I guess so..just trying to make my point to keep the area wet.
Absolutely use a lubricant designed for clay. If that's not handy, use a heavy coating of detailing spray. From experience using soap can dry out the clay and shorten the life.

I would strongly suggest using a lubricant when using detailing clay (a 6:1 Water/Woolite solution, don't use a detergent as it will dry out the clay) that should be applied liberally.
There are only two or three detailers clay manf. (Clay Magic is the largest) so it shouldn't make a big difference which re-sellers brand name you buy.
The idea of using clay with just plain water has been suggested before, in my ten years of using it I always you plenty of lube and have had no problems with clay residue on the paint surface...
