I am looking to make the switch to a orbital polisher.
Seems the Porter Cable 7424 s the one most frequently used.
Griots has it for $199 and says beware of cheaper models with plastic, non veneted plates that can cause heat buildup and damage paint. Griots products seem expensive but I have gotten good recommendations on them. Griotts also says to only use their pads on their machine.
Now Sonus and Costal Tool seem to have the same product at a much better price. But is it the same product. Any truth to Griots claim?
Where do you buy pads for application and removal?
Several places sell the porter cable 7424 outright, like coastal tool (where I got mine) or Lowes. Some places like Meguiars and I believe Griots rebadge and sell the porter cable with added features like a warranty.
Griots is referring to the cheaper models sold at places like Pep Boys, etc. which may work well for tasks like wax application, but not as well for swirl removal.
PC 7336 and 7424 are exactly the same unit except that the 7424 comes factory equipped with the 5 inch counter weight for 5 inch backer pads while the 7336 comes factory equipped with the 6 inch counter weight for the more popular 6 inch backer plates. Most people I know including myself run a 6 inch velcro backer plate and some type of interchangable foam pads and do not use the cheapo plastic and foam pad that comes in the PC box. I get my velcro backer plate and Lake Country Foam pads from www.topoftheline.com

~One mans opinion / observations~
Quality foam pads (Lake County Mfg., and many re-seller’s) used for detailing are made from specially engineered European foam, a blend of thermally reticulated polyurethane with a 99% open cell structure, created specifically for compounding, polishing and finishing. This foam allows air to circulate through the pad to reduce heat build-up, so these foam pads do not require a ventilated backing plate
~Hope this helps~

Heat build up with an orbital should not even be a consideration, it is extremely nominal, I have an infrared heat tester gun that I can prove this to myself with....
Just bought a 7336SP from Lowe's for $89.97 because I had a 10% off coupon. Can't beat that!
Looks like they skimped on sanding discs though. There was supposed to a 100, 120, 150, 200, and 220, but there was only a single 120 grit. Not like I'm going to be using the sandpaper on the car anytime soon...
