Last week the tech inspector at BMP told me I need a snell 2000
or better rated helmet. I looked at my 2004 nhra rule book and
it says snell 90 or better. Have the rules changed for 2005?
The NHRA 2005 Rulebook shows "Snell 90" as good. *I* was under the impression that the number was the year of the standard, made every 5 years, and that a standard expired after 15 years. That would make a "Snell 05" a new standard and a "Snell 90", as just expired. But it's in the book as good. Maybe it's a misprint. I haven't seen it listed in the "corrections" section on line or in the National Dragster. Next time tell him you left your book at home, but that you checked it out and it showed good in the new book. Report back on what they say.
I finally found out last weekend why a DOT helmet does not suffice. I figured that if a helmet could withstand an impact OUTSIDE the safety of a car, like on a bike, it would be fine.
The Snell rating addresses the issues of fire retardance/safety. Since a fire would be more likely in a car crash vs bike crash, I can see why the Snell rating is required.
Mark not only does the snell rating address the fire issue, it also addresses multiple impacts like repeatedly banging your head on a rollbar. Bob
Or against a brick wall when you can't get a car to run consistently.
Speaking of Impacts. I know of an NHRA tech that observed a frustrated racer that violently threw his helmet into his enclosed trailer after he lost a round he didn't think he should have. After the helmet quit bouncing a round, the tech DQed the helmet for having received too many impacts. True story.

I have been out of racing soooo long. I told my wife come hel- or high water, I'm going to find time to get back to it. I campaigned a 70 Mustang in 71 and 72 in the midwest. That's how long it's been.
Do I need a full face helmet? Would rather go with the open version. Looking at a 10 sec Vette so I should have the full face but I feel trapped in those things. And I may just end up running our stock '03.
