Default Brake Controller Question Need advice

Hi. I have an Activator II and think I have a problem.

I tow a car on an open trailer weighing about 5000 lbs total.

When I first drive off the trailer brake works fine.

After about 15 minutes of driving, when I apply the brake pedal on the truck, I get a flashing OL. I am not sure how it could be overloaded as no weight is added only driving.

I tow with a 2003 Avalanche 1500.

Thanks for your help

I have towed heavy for years and I use a Tekonsha brake controller. Never any problems. If your brakes work OK I would ignore it.

Usually brakes are tighter when you first start driving and tend to loosen up. I then adjust the controller to be a little more aggresive.

Bob

Edit: I just looked at the unit you have. Overload indicates a short or low power and is not related to weight. You have a wiring problem.

Right, but I don't think it will fix your problem. From the website it says you have a short or low power. You may just need to clean the connector contacts or low power could be a poor ground.

I did some cleaning of the connectors and will be towing soon so I shall let you all know if it is fixed.

Did quite a bit of lubing the moving parts on the trailer too.

Edgar, you can also spray the contacts with WD40. It really works. Good luck.

Yup Chris (INSANITY) told me to do that too but I did not.

Will do tomrrow.

The controller seemed to work better though still not perfect.

When the brake is pressed lightly sometimes it acts erratic with flashing error messages.

You have a wiring problem. Wire, contacts, ground etc....

Could be a bad controller but that's unlikely.

Hey Edgar,

Ours was doing the same thing. It turned out to be a wire that was cut running across the axle. It was shorting out intermittently. Trace all your wiring and I bet you will find a cut somewhere.

Since I am pretty mechanically and I guess electrically, challenged, how would I go about "tracing" my wires?
