A friendly reminder to all of you who have old helmets..
I took a look at mine Friday night and there was a crack in the plastic shell exposing the next layer, the neck trim was loose and it looked really beat up in general. I wasn't feeling very safe in it.
Mine was at least 5yrs old and I paid very little for it and figured I should spend some money for new one. This is what I just ordered
And a bag to protect it...
Remember just because your helmet is still rated okay, doesn't mean it is safe.
There's your problem! You store it in a bag like that and someone is likely to throw their bowling ball on top of it!!
How old until tech rejects em anyway?
Actually, I didn't store it in a bag. ( ) It fell off my shelf in the garage a few times, rolled around in the vette during, after and to events.
How old depends on the certification, mine was an SA95, which I think is good for 15years (maybe 10yrs, can't remember). If they do not look safe, cracked, beat up, etc. I think they can boot you or make you get a new one.
I think someone got disqualified for a race after throwing their helmet on the ground in front of a tech.
Just got a new Pyrotect helmet shipped from Pyrotect/Bell. They are shipping SA2005/M2005 rated helmets now. From what I have read, helmet ratings are good for 10 years at most tracks. In researching helmets, I was surprised how many people on the forum and their tracks allow them to run motorcycle helmets! (M20xx rated) The Corvette Challenge in South FL, requires SA rated, not M rated helmets.
